"Just an update on the sin tax on tobacco in CA failed (2.60 a pack). Big tobacco spent a bundle to defeat it but I still wonder who still smokes here? There are many outdoor areas/communties where there's a ban. I guess we quitters can be proud it made it to the ballot."
The one in Missouri ($.80 tax) also failed. I was SHOCKED that it failed. Now, my problem with this particular tax was that 85% of the money went to uninsured persons (medicaid) and only 15% went to smoking cessation programs, which I thought was too low. I'm really curious why these taxes are failing now?!?! I mean, it seems to me that there are FAR more non-smokers than smokers, so you'd think that anybody who doesn't have a vested interest (i.e. ALL non-smokers) would vote for this?! So why are these failing? Again, I'm glad that the one in Missouri failed because I didn't like where the money was going, and I don't know anything about the California tax, but it just seems odd to me. :quest: :quest: :quest:

LOL! Either do Missourians! :) Is there anyone who DOES like taxes?!?! I mean, BESIDES the polititions who put the money right back into their pockets!
Thanks for the information on where the money is going Sunflower. I think it's a crime that polititions think they can tax the smokers for non-smoking related things and it's completely OK. I guess more and more people are beginning to see this and are putting a stop to it. Last I read, 25% of Missourians smoked, but this was a few years ago... it could be less now. And like you Sunflower, I'm SOOOOOOOOO glad I'm not one of them! :)

I don't know, and I'd be curious to find out where the money went to (Free, Shevie, and anyone else in AZ????)
Anyone else know of a state where there was a cigarette tax that either failed or passed on this last election? I'd be curious to hear more results as well.

The proposition passed here in AZ. And I am glad it did. If the cost doesn't get people to quit, it will defiantly help in keeping people (mainly children) from starting. Hoorah for that.

I read that it's only 15% of Californians that smokes(I'm proud to not be one of them :)
Less than 10 % of the suggested tax of $2.60 tax was supposed to prevent kids to smoke and help people to quit.

I, too, was shocked, BFS.......I was sure it was a shoo in. So now I'm wondering how much is the tax that passed in AZ? Not that it really matters. I'm just curious. And thanks for the post. I was wondering how MO went on this.
