Dealing with Panic at Work

I was told by others that they have successfully gotten on FMLA for Panic Disorder. I will be trying personally when I see my doctor Monday morning.

If you find out about FMLA let me know. I think that it is covered but I'm not sure. As far as panic attacks at work, they are the worst. I manage anywhere from 3 to 11 collectors at my job, and the worst part is when I am in panic attack mode and I feel like eveyone knows something is wrong. Maybe I am the only one that feels this way, but when I get anxious at work if feels like I could run and run....forever.

Today at work was the absolute closest I have ever come to a full fledged attack without actually having one. I have never gone that far before without going over the edge and "dropping". Xanax didn't help, the cold air coming from the vent seemed to stall the hot flashes which in turn stalled the entire process but I couldn't stand in front of the vent all day! I was so scared, this was the first time the xanax didn't help. I hope I'm not building a tolerance! Throughout the 8 hour shift my heart never stopped racing. I eventually took 4 xanax over the 8 hours, never slowing my heart beat but making me very tired and lethargic. Apparently this was enough to keep it away. I felt lightheaded and out-of-body all day and still do here at home after work but the worst symptoms have left thank God! I pray tomorrow will be better. Does anyone know if Panic Disorder is covered by FMLA? This is my first time here and just typing this makes me feel better. Thank you all.

Isn't that a horrible feeling. I know when I do get a little hungry I get that lightheaded feeling which triggers an attack. I hardly ever miss a meal, I have always had a very hearty appetite, which doesn't help when on SSRIs...lol. Up until I started taking them, I would do anything to gain weight. I guess those days are over. In between meals, I do try to eat something such as a banana, or a protein bar to ward off the hunger pangs. Been tested for blood sugar levels and it is normal, so i know it is the anxiety that causes these feelings. It is such an uncomfortable feeling and I guess my biggest fear is that I am going to pass out. I also notice that this happens a lot right before my menstrual cycle.(Hey girls, any of you have increased anxiety during that time of the month?) My anxiety is probably peaking at this time due to both PMS and the fear of changing meds again. I guess it will take awhile before the Effexor kicks in again, so I will just have to deal with this the best I can for now.

Oh I know that feeling well! That has been my major complaint throughout this whole ordeal! I called it feeling "light". I have noticed it more when I don't eat, it seems to heighten the feeling. Are you eating before you go to work? Also, I did get off xanax, it worked but one of the side effects is dizziness, one of my other major complaints. I'm not sure what exactly to say to help you, but try eating, "They" also say have small meals throughout the day or healthy snacks, that may help you, too. Let us know if it helps. Cecilia

Thanks for your suggestions. I seems that most of my panic attacks take place at work or the surrounding area (the lobby, shopping area, etc.). Had a panic free weekend, but as soon as I returned to work, it started again. It's not like my job itself is stressful, it's the panic and anxiety that is. I've been at my job over 10 years and am very comfortable in my role, but I had a very bad day today. As soon as I got off the subway, the "floaty feeling" and unsteadyness began as I was walking to the office. This happened a number of times throughout the day (4 times to be exact). I cannot pinpoint what triggers the anxiety at work. I am getting very frustrated and angry at my condition. I feel like I cannot reach my full potential in my career. I am currently taking Xanax, which doesn't seem to work as well as it used to and I am switching back to Effexor XR after trying Paxil CR for a few weeks. The Effexor seemed to work pretty well at 75 mgs. but the weight gain was what made me change meds. I noticed the Paxil increased my anxiety, so I am slowly tapering off. I guess the weight gain is the lesser of the two evils. At least this time, I will be aware of this side effect. Anyway, I just needed to vent. If anyone experiences similar problems, or has any suggestions on how to deal with that "floaty feeling" (that's the only way I can describe it), I would like to hear from you.

When you feel that first "Uh-Oh!" coming on, you should do your calming breaths. I've stopped my attacks by first doing a relaxing breath from the diaphram and saying "relax" as I release my breath. You can say it in your head. Then I start doing the calming breaths from your diaphram counting from 10 down to 1, and as you're releasing your breath you'll say 10 in your head and so on. You don't need to close your eyes while you this, I would suggest that if you have papers in front of you on the table to concentrate on those as you're breathing and counting. No one will be the wiser. Continue doing the counts from 10 down to 1 until you're feeling better. Try not to think of the attack that might be coming on, but rather try to concentrate only on the counting and slow breaths. What you're wanting to do is slow your breathing and divert your thoughts. Once the attack is over, be sure to tell yourself how proud you are of yourself! We gotta keep those positive affirmations flowing! Hope this helps you like it's helped me. Cecilia

Hi. Four-hour meetings usually have a break period somewhere in there. The things is is to challenge your fear and practice relaxation. You knew others were not watching you, yet you didn't stop yourself at that point or practice relaxation. Are you following the panic program?

I was wondering how many of you deal with panic attacks at work. Yesterday I had to sit through a 2 hour meeting and halfway through I started feeling the panic creep up on me. I can't pinpoint why this happened, or what my thought process was that brought on the initial uncomfortableness. I did not have to speak at this meeting. As soon as the dizzyness started, I began to work it up. I started to think everyone could see what was happening (although I know they couldn't), my other thought was that I would pass out (which I never have) and be embarrassed in front of my coworkers. I then excused myself and went back to my desk to pop a Xanax. The fear I felt walking back to my desk was overwhelming. Well anyway I got through the meeting and felt fine during lunch. But now I am worried about about an upcoming conference and how will I be able to sit through 4 hour meetings every morning for 3 days. Any suggestions about coping skills while at work?
