Recovery without Medication

I am also unmedicated, to a point. I do use Xanax occasionally. I tried Lexipro and Iver the course of a month, I couldn't eat, had nausea and diarrhea, night spasms and daytime tremors. I lost 7 lbs. and many hours of time with my children. I've been off the Lexapro for over 2 weeks and trying to get my body back to normal. I really don't want to take another SSRI, since I'm now afraid of it and I also think I'mn sensistive to meds (1/4 to 1/2 Xanax at .25 mg. does the trick usually for me). I've been using guided relaxation and meditation tapes and also sound wave technology and that also helps. I see a new therapist in 2 weeks - that helps, too! Keep us posted on your progress. I'd like to be drug-free and recovered soon, too!

Hi! My name's Doug, and I have recovered somewhat from my most severe bout of PA's about 3 years ago, which had me housebound. I have come a long way through my own exposure therapy, without medication. It is possible, although I still have some isues with being alone in certain situations, which I am still working on. I wish you the BEST of luck, and am glad to offer any help I can give.

Hey, now there's an idea! Why are you being negative about completing a marketable book? What an accomplishment that would be, even if it doesn't sell millions of copies. Just getting the book done would be awesome! Please give yourself that opportunity at least. I'd love to read it, btw.

Thanks, Ann Marie! *laughing* I went back to high school as an adult five years ago on my mission to get back or finish all the things the agoraphobia drove me away from accomplishing. At the end of the two years I started a project I called "The Photographic Memory Album". It is exactly what you suggest I do! Out of every trip, whether the trip is five or eight days long, I only remember moments...not even entire events, but flashes of moments. While I'm out there, I'm in a sort of sensory overload. I'm hyper-aware of everything...LOL...and at the same time I manage to walk into a huge tree in front of me, or some such thing. An agoraphobic like me just can't see the trees for the forest! My brain 'swallows' everything whole. Is it any wonder I usually feel completely out of control out there? I picked a number of photographs and set them in a photo album, one photo on the left page, and a detailed description and commentary surrounding the photo and on the right page as well. I write as though I'm talking to someone who's never been in the woods before. They're miniature stories with humour as the main point. There is nothing funnier than the antics of an agoraphobic in the wilds of Canada! I've been considering continuing the project with a mind to turning it into a marketable book. But I keep thinking, "Who would care about your experiences? And you know you'll quit before you finish it because it's just too big a task for someone like you!" But maybe I'll try again for these next two trips. Thanks for the encouragement.

Hi, Stephanie. Just a thought: After yout description in the post above of the outdoors, I wonder if you're intending on taking a camera along? After the trip, might photos not just help to create more positive memories and images?

Hi Chachi... I'm like you. I don't and can't take medication to help me with the agoraphobia. It's taken a mighty long time to become able to function in just about any circumstance, and my goal now is to learn to be *comfortable* while I'm there! LOL Freedom should be fun. That's why I go canoeing. By the time I get back indoors to dry, warm, comfortable and easy surroundings, everything in my life suddenly seems DELIGHTFUL! The contrast between living out in the rain and wind on a cold, hard log (albeit next to a cozy fire) and what my home and hometown are like is what allows me to see and partake in the small daily pleasures that abound in my life. I need to place myself in drastic circumstances once in a while to remind me of what true discomfort really is. Keep going!

It's great that you are feeling better, and all without medication too. Everyone wants to be like this. Some try and are successful, but others can't do it on their own or with therapy alone. Medication is prescribed by the doctor who may prescribe according to the individual's diagnosis and severity of the panic attacks. Panic attacks are often co-morbid (occurring with) other conditions, such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, etc. Remember that panic attacks are only now "coming out of the closet" and into our everyday vocabulary. As you hear more and more about it, you will discover that you are not alone. Some people have gone untreated for years, as attested to by some of the posts on our board, and their condition may have worsened over time. However as it becomes demystified and recognized in society, and people find proper treatment when they need it, you will discover other people like yourself.

I'm wondering if anyone has recovered without taking medication. I've noticed that my symptoms have improved in the last months without having to take medication. I've been working on this slowly, but surely, but I'm discouraged when I see that no one does this without medication.
