I used to get these almost every night. I kept a glass of water or some other drink beside my bed on the nightstand every night so it would be there when I needed it. I also keep fans going (yes, even in winter) because I find the movement of air helps me breathe. I used to think "well I must have had a bad dream that started this". I found them more terrifying then the ones during the day, because I would just bolt upright out of a deep sleep. It got to the point that I avoided going to sleep as long as possible, probably why my sleeping patterns to this day are pretty horrible. I'm 25 and have had panic attacks since I was 13, they were more common for me back then. Now I tend to wake up and take some deep breaths, and adjust to a comfortable position (I find them more common for me if I wake up on my stomach). I like the idea of the writing pad beside the bed...I used to play solitaire on the computer until I calmed down and was drowsy enough to go back to sleep. Its really nice knowing I'm not alone in all this:)

Yes, i will ask my doctor about it soon. I had breathing tests done and hopefully everything will be clear. But its this night thing thats bothering me. Anyhow, i have no other choice but to check it out and then maybe i can move on.
I guess it could be panic. But somehow my mind is telling me its not (what else is new :confuse: lol)

I have this. It usually happens in the early morning hours when I'm in my deepest sleep. For me it took awhile to realize/remember what I was thinking just before waking but often my mind is "relaxed" & trying to process an anxiety I'm having OR I have an instant short lived flash memory of something from my past that would trigger me. At least 50% of my panic attacks happen this way. It used to set me off for the day, now I can usually calm my system down in about an hour.
At my worse i had something resembling sleep apnea too. Even my therapist wanted me to have it checked out by my doctor. But as soon as my anxiety during the day went down the "sleep apnea" dissapeared". I didnt think it was panic attacks because i would wake up and feel like i had stopped breathing and was short of breath. But now i think it was panic attacks because they are just gone now that i deal with my anxiety during the day.
But you know, there is nothing wrong with having this checked out by a sleep clinic at least you will know and you can be more easy with yourself :)

I just learned about "nocturnal panic attacks" in one of my classes and this sounds like the it could be the case with you, Angel, even though you think it could possibly be sleep apnea ( i remember your previous post:-). Trying looking that up to see if those symptoms match the ones you are having. Nocturnal panic attacks are common and many people wake up out of the blue gasping for air, have a racing heart, sweat profusely, are short of breath etc. But get it checked out anyway to ease your fears. I also read that chronic arousal of anxiety during the night could be a kind of protection against sleep apnea, I guess as a way to wake you to correct your breathing. If this happens for you often, it isn't totally out of the question but don't let it worry you too much. I went through a phase when my anxiety was at its worst that I thought I suffered from sleep apnea as well and I don't and you are probably fine too. Hope this helps you. Keep me posted!

I did come across something on the internet a while back about sleep apnea sufferers. It is best for them not to sleep on their back as it does interfere with their breathing somehow, I know this sometimes happens to me , so I usually sleep on my side making sure that you don't sleep too hard on your jaw. Do you take any anti-histamines like Phenergan before you sleep. I recall too occassions when I took this Drug and I had the worst breathing problems in my sleep. Do you have a deviated septum, as sometimes this can also interfere with breathing. I know how you feel Angel but hang in there.

I thought I had sleep apnea too! My doctor did some blood tests and an ECG and assured me that I was well and there was no need to worry. I found this to have really helped as at least I can add this to my positive thoughts when I am having an attack. I was convinced that there was something wrong with my heart and it made my panic a lot worse.
Do get it checked to put your mind at rest. Doctors should check us anyway to make sure there is nothing wrong and that what we have is panic and nothing else.
Well, if it worries you so much just ask your doctor to send you to a sleep disorder clinic. They have very very good tests they can do to check for stuff like sleep apnea and the likes. And at least you will know if it is sleep apnea or nightime panics. Then you can deal with it accordingly.

thanks for your input. But i really dont feel that this is panic/anxiety in my situation.It sounds like its panic in yours though.
The reason being is because it usually happens when i'm laying down on my back. I will be falling alseep, OR it will happen to me in the middle of the night when i'm already asleep. I just wake up and the next thing i know is i'mstanding up tryign to regualte my breathing again.
I have looked into sleep apnea...and wonder if its that. I remember putting a post about this not too long ago and i was FREAKING OUT. So i think i'm just gonna get this checked out. I just fear like i'm gonna sleep one day and never wake up from this breathing attack at night. I'm sorry, i hate thinking this way....but i'm so bothered by this....
