Holding your breath

Thank you all for your responses. It makes you feel a lot better when you find you are not alone in your experiences, scary as they are. I thought I was the only person on this earth that feels like this. Lets keep up the good work in helping every one of us fight this disorder and making us stronger people in the process. Thank you.

Unconsciously holding my breath is the first sign of tension in me. Unfortunately, I'm usually the last person to notice that I'm doing it. Others will begin to ask if I'm feeling sad or depressed. Eventually I realize they're asking me that because I've being sighing a lot or taking big, deep exasperated sounding breaths. The sighing and sudden deep breathing is my body's way of trying to regulate my breathing again. I'm a practicing buddhist and have found there isn't any buddhist practice that isn't tailor-made for agoraphobics and other phobics. I am most especially grateful for the constant emphasis put on mindful awareness and meditative breathing exercises. It is literally impossible to feel stress while the body is in a state of physical relaxation. A terrific bonus for us is that while our attention is focussed on our bodies, out heads - where all the freaking out comes from - are not able to run down dark alleys looking for trouble. You're definitely not alone!

Thank you Anne Marie for your reply. I am currently working on Section 6 of the Panic Program. Is the Box Breathing Section 7? Thanks

Hi, Ann. I would suggest you look at the section about box breathing in the Panic Program.

I have been suffering from panic attacks and anxiety for over 2 years now. I now find that I hold my breath a lot and my shoulders are very tense and up at my ears! I can be sitting watching TV or reading a book and I will become aware that I have been holding my breath. Do I sound mad or does anyone else find that they are doing this. If anyone has overcome this, please can they let me know how they have managed to do it. Any comments? Thanks for your time.
