You have forgot how panic works. It turns every thing around, It will make you sad during periods of happiness. It will make you imagine things are happening that are not. If you are thinking one thing it is likely another. What ever you are fearing it is likely the opposite. All you can do is tell yourself over and over that this is so and there is nothing to fear. What ever you think during periods of panic is most likely wrong so don't believe it, do not go down that path. This happens to me. I start to imagine thing that aren't happening. When some one forgets to contact me I think they are mad at me instead of that they got busy and forgot. Now I wait to see for sure. Imagination is great in artistic situations but very bad in panic. If all else fails find something to distract yourself till you know for sure. Do not allow panic to cause you to imagine the worst. This is common I think to all of us, so members what do you do when panic is warping your perception.

You say that the fears get compounded at night, I've experinced this owrry before too,right before you are trying to fall asleep and you just can't because of the continus thoughts running through your mind.
What have you tried to do in these situations, where you have no control but this perceived loss makes you noticeably anxious? For me just talking myself out works...I would basically prove to myself that my thoughts are not logical...
It also helps that I do believe that there is a time and place for everything, kind of like pre - destiny...so for example, we can't change when we will die, it's already decided in a way. In the end, there is no point in me worrying because I can't change it as it is...this thought pattern sometimes helps me deal with the thought.
Thanks for your posts. It is a particular situation as he is on Ihis way back from Iraq - so no, no way to contact him. Distraction works but the fears seem to get compounded at night. When I woke up, I was quite agitated - imagiing the worst.
I seem to cope ok with little stressors and even someof the larger ones, but situations where I have absolutely no control are very upsetting, especially loss or perceived loss.
Emma, try to think of previous situations where you were in the same spot you are in right now.
What is making you feel uncertain? Have you felt this way before? What was the outcome? The goal is to hopefully think of previous situations where you had this feeling, and thinks turned out to be fine, this should help relax you and ease your uncertainty.
If this does not work, you can try distracting yourself until your friend does contact you. What are some things you can do until then?

Long story but I am waitng for my friend to return from his tour. He told me it would take time to contact me from the time he left but this is a trigger for me. Uncertainty and fear of loss. How do I deal with a real life stressor - with real life implications?Breathing just doesn't seem to do it for this kind of situation.
