Hi i just recently started exposure therapy and a quick and simple technique i was advised to do is the following: Before leaving home: stand tall and look straight ahead, move your eyes so you are looking upwards at the same time breathing in, slowly close your eyes still looking up as you slowly breathe out move the eyes down to horizon level keeping eyes closed, do a few more in and out breathes and open eyes slowly and continue on your way and if things get uneasy repeat the exercise.

Hi Toni, Yes - you said it, the feelings and thoughts do pass. Remember you do have control. You listed some good coping mechanisms! You also mentioned you have had successes - Please try to find strength in these positive experiences. Remember if one tak seems too daunting, work on smaller ones first and then build up to bigger ones. Casey ________________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

Hi, I find exposure therapy hard. It is daunting & I have failed - but I have also succeeded where I was sure I would not. The difference between the situations was focusing on something that surrounded me - be it a stack of apples at the grocer, where was the tree they came from? How long it took to stack them? etc... same with the game of football; I watched the ball, I focused on people in the crowd - I let the time go. I don't know if this is what we are meant to be doing exactly - whether we are supposed to be thnking about what we are afraid of and challenging the thoughts - (which I do 24/7 anyway), but it helped me at least get out in public. Counting to 150 in 3's also helps if you are stuck in a situation that you may find yourself unable to escape from. It always passes doesn't it? Take care, Toni

Hi Mily3city, Thanks so much for sharing your experiences of your exposure work here with us! Sounds like you are doing a fantastic job - Congratulations on your hard work! Angel had some excellent tips for helping in these situations. Hopefully others will share some more tips for what has worked for them. Remember to take things slow and work at your own pace. Be sure to check back in with us to let us know how you are doing. Take care, Casey ________________________________________ The Panic Center Support Team

Hi there! You are right, exposure work is really great for us. It helps us face our fears!! In terms of tricks, i usually just keep reminding myself that nothing can happen to me in these situations. For example, when i'm out doing exposure work, i always get nervous and i fear every symptom i experience such as dizziness, heavy breathing etc. But then i just think objectively and remind myself that no matter how scared I am of fainting from anxiety, its NOT gonna happen. It cannot happen!! These facts usually calm me down! Everything we fear happening usually cannot happen anyways. So thats something u can think about!!! I would love to here some more tips!! ;)

I am amazed about how effective the exposure work is. This is the essence of therapy. It is also important to read about agoraphobia and panic to know what we are facing with. And the panic program is a great in explaining this. Then we can plan our exposure work. When I started doing my outings it was sometimes hard to stand in some place for 30 minutes. Many times I was feeling strong urge to escape. I was afraid of panic... afraid that I will go crazy. Many times I was just about to run. But I managed to stay almost every time. In hard moments I concentrated on "safe places" and I was talking to myself "I am safe, anytime I can just walk to a place that is safe, it is so close". So people who are just starting their therapy need to remember that some anxiety while doing exposure is needed. It is the only way to overcome phobia. When I was in a place that was making me anxious I was thinking about what I would do if I was really scared. F.e. I could call for ambulance, or I could call for a taxi and return to home, or I could ask someone for help etc. Does anyone have some "tricks" that can be used while exposure to stand anxiety ?
