Lets talk about meds...

Side note about SSRIs. At the very lowest level, all SSRIs perform the same function. What varies is your personal body/brain chemistry. If someone says that a particular SSRI worked well for them, do not bet the farm that it will work well for you. It may - or it may not. This is why there are a variety of SSRIs on the market. Each formulation is a little different from another. If you find one that works well with your body/brain chemistry and gives you benefit, stick with it as long as you can. Also, I've read other's posts where they've experienced very nasty withdrawl effects from SSRIs. SSRIs have both a "ramp up" and "ramp down" period. If your target dosage is 200mg, your doctor might start you at 50mg for 10 days to 2 weeks, then move you up 50mg at a time at 2 week intervals. Coming off an SSRI is the same thing, just in reverse. Never abrubtly stop taking a medication, even if you desperately want off of it. Follow your doctor's advice. Educate yourself on the medication (available on the paperwork your pharmacy can provide you for the medication, on the manufacturer's website, and on multiple other websites out there). An example: Xanax (which is not an SSRI), when taken in doses near or above 4mg, must be tapered off. Suddenly discontinuing the medication from that level can result in seizures. Educating yourself about the medication you're on, or your doctor has recommended - preferably prior to actually starting the medication - is something you have 100% control over. If you don't understand something in the literature, ask your doctor and pharmacist. With this knowledge comes power. Power to keep yourself healthy. Power to understand what the medication is doing, how it does it, and what the possible side effects are. Being an active participant in your healthcare isn't what we're traditionally taught, but cannot be understated. Don't worry that you're not a chemist or a pharmacist. Ask those who do know so you can better help yourself. Be Well~

Tofranil: useless Buspar: ditto Celexa: (inability to climax, not much noticable benefit) Lexapro: developed a tolerance, became useless, didn't do much in the first place Serzone: mild benefit for anticipatory anxiety but didn't really feel like it was helping Wellbutrin: balanced out some of the side effects of Serzone but that's about it. Xanax: works - but I only take it "as needed" and never more than 2mg per 4 hours. I could see how higher dosages would be very effective - if I wanted the chemical equivalent of a labotomy (which I don't). I can also see how some folks with addictive personalities could become dependant on Xanax quite easily. I'll be starting with a new doctor shortly and hope to finally find a med that doesn't make me forget or be highly drowsy/dangerous while driving (like Xanax does). Just my opinion, but if any doctor tells me to take Xanax on a regular basis (3x per day or whatever) as a "maintenance med", it's my personal measuring stick that it's time to find another doctor. While Xanax works for me on an as-needed basis, as a maintenance medication it could lead to the development of an increased tolerance level, then to dependence, then to addicition. No thanks. That's just someone practicing "bad medicine" and I need help, not the type of help that comes at the cost of another problem. Best~

Morgan, I really like Clonazepam...it works well with the Zoloft...and last week when I ran out I did feel more irritable and anxious...perhaps these are the signs of dependency, but I find that both medications really help with my anxiety and panic attacks... I hope it helped...

AP, I was on Effexor for about 2-3 months....I didn't think it helped me...it may have just been the timing as I was planning a wedding so things were crazy...but after the Celexa and Effexor -- Zoloft has been so much better...I feel the difference and I am taking it with Clonazepam (Klonapin?) which also helps... Good luck and let us know how you are... Take care, B

I only tried: Amitryptaline - 2 days on 2 days off or I feel like a zombie (I'm not depressed though, it's for headaches). Effexor XR for 2 days ever - it caused major panic for 36 hours, extreme nausea after the 1st 12 hours (over the toilet extreme) & hot sweats - literally puddles on my floor when I was lying in my bathroom over the toilet! Terrible! Trying Clonazepam tonight for the 1st time - hope it goes well. I hope it helps my dizziness & difficulty swallowing because they are back in full swing! How did Clonazepam work for you "SoTired"?

I loved my zoloft. But it hasn't been studied enough to give to pregnant women. I have been doing pretty well without although, I will go back on it at the end of my pregnancy since I will be proned to depression/anxiety after the baby is born. But anyway, I liked it alot. The side effects stunk at first, but the go away. Zoloft helps depression and anxiety, so thats a bonus.

I have been on 10 or 20 mg of Prozac for 10 years with no side effects that i know of except a lower sex drive. My aunt has taken it for years too. I stay on it as when I go off of it, I end up back where I started. Try the lowest dose, which is 10 first. Most people take 20mg. Paxil was ok but I gained weight and had terrible side effects from withdrawing but did ok when used a step down method.
