Well said Theresa.  I did a lot of bargaining and all it ever got me was a new quit date.  This quit has a lot of delays

Oh!

That is way different than what I thought bargaining was.
I thought I was bargaining with myself to wait 15 minutes.

Such as, I'll give me a chocolate if I wait another 15 minutes.
I had it all wrong.
I was BRIBING me.

Ok, got it.

Theresa... look at you go, girl!  Even Pen agrees with you.
Thanks for the lucid answer!

Theresa just about nailed it and there is very little I can add but in short:-

Hi Henny Penny,
I'm not sure about this but here's what I think
Delaying is when you have a crave, and you are feeling really weakened and about to cave in and smoke. Instead of giving up right at that moment and smoking, you delay....oh, I'll wait 15 more minutes....then busy yourself with something else.  More times than not, that 15 minutes is all you need to get over yourself and get past the crave.

Bargaining is when you have that crave and are feeling really weakened and about to cave in and smoke.  Instead of waiting that 15 minutes (delaying) you bargain with yourself and find that reason to smoke....Oh I'm far along in the quit that having just one to get past this hump will be ok, after this I just won't smoke anymore. The bargaining gives validation to your cave in, and the delaying, delays you thinking about the cave in .

Hi all,

I'm not quite understanding the difference between "bargaining" and "delaying" in regards to craves.

People have said that it's dangerous to bargain with yourself about cigarettes but
I've also seen the advice to delay a crave.

These seem like similar approaches but subtly different somehow?
Semantics?  Aren't they about the same thing? Just curious.

Would anyone like to share their opinion?
