    Cigarettes Not Smoked

I know someone who still uses two patches at a time, two years into his quit. The only thing I have to say about it is , "Ouch!" That's more expensive than smoking. However, he isn't smoking. That's the plus. He's afraid to stop using the patches. Patches never worked for me. I was never ready for the withdrawal symptoms. 21mgs were not enough. At least when I go cold turkey, I know withdrawal symptoms will be really strong. They were just as strong when I tried patches.

NRT's are addictive because they contain nicotine. I was addicted to the lozenges for 2 years. I do not know if I could have quit smoking without the NRT, but my gradual weening was a 2 year journey. The 2 women that I know at work that are still using nicotine lozenges after 3 years really do not have a desire to quit using them. They crave the lozenges now..not cigs. This differs from my quit in that I kept using the lozenges because I craved smoking. I used chantix to get off the lozenges! Wow, well, it all boils down to acheiving freedom from nicotine. Everyone has their own route..as long as we all get there. The quitting process is so different for everyone. Each experience, relapse, NRT, quit attempt, is a stepping stone that is going to get us to our freedom from this addiction. So, do not be discouraged. Everything you are going through will get you to freedom; as long as you do not quit quitting. Do Not give Up!

I think dipping is chewing tabacco. I also know someone who still chew nicotine gum years later. In a perfect world he shouldn't still take nicotine but it's better than smoking. I am taking chantix and have quit on it before  but when I stopped chantix, I smoked again after a few months. I don't like that my quitting is contingent on a medicne but I'm doing work myself too. I may have to stay on it for almost a year and do some of the work to stay stopped.

I know of a guy who is still using the patches 2 years after quitting smoking. In his defense, at least he's not smoking.

Thanks for this timely reminder Beckylynn.

It is important to come up with a weaning schedule & personal allowances when using such a product.

NRT are very helpful to many but they are not a magic bullet.
