Read some other posts on this site and you will see that you are not alone. I have not driven on a freeway in about 10 years or more. This is a good site with a good program. Hope it helps you.

Dear Linny5 Just read your posting and wanted to respond . I too suffer from panic and anxiety while driving in heavy traffic . However I can tell you that I am starting to feel better about it. Just wanted to first assure that you are not crazy, and you are not going there. Im sure you are probaly already aware of the fact that its not really the act of driving that you are afraid of . Its the panicky feelings you have had while doing it that you are scared of. For me , this started one day comming home from work, I was tired. felt stressed and had a major panic attack while driving in heavy traffic. I pulled off the road and told myself, wow" that was close , what if that happened in a place I couldnt have pulled over. I would have wrecked or just became so panicked, I would have died. I know now this, wasnt what I should have done. The one thing you have to remember and find a way to beleive is this.PANIC ATTACKS ARE SCAREY BUT THEY ARE HARMLESS AND YOU CAN FUNCTION WITH A PANIC ATTACK. You are correct in trying to start learning how to overcome this problem. However be kind to you. If you husband is impatient and not understanding of this , you do not need him for a practice partner. Find someone else, or after you have practiced some coping skills for panic , try alone but dont start on the freeway. Try a less traveled road at a less traveled time of day. It is so hard to get this concept , but it alone will be the most effective weapon you will ever have against panic. YOU CAINT FIGHT PANIC BY FIGHTING IT . I just say to myself now , you know what you may scare me ,but im more scared of not doing whatI need to do. So here i am come on. You have to fight panic by accepting it. It sounds hard but it does get easier, you have to practice .

I just came across this site and I think it may help me with my problem. I have read similar situations with others and find some comfort in that I am not totally alone. I have a fear of driving on the expressway. It is becoming a hindrance in my life and I need to get over this. I am 43 and for years never had the need to do it, but now my husbands family lives far and I need to drive on the expressways to get to their houses for family events. My husband does not have his license due to other reasons and I am the only one who should drive us places on the expressway, but cannot. I am so embarrassed but am so afraid of the excessive speed, the idea of driving so long without stopping, accidents, getting lost and the panic attacks I may feel when I am driving and just plain losing control. Yesterday I asked my husband to come with me while I try, when I went by the expressway I totally panicked when I saw it was so busy and could not do it. He became furious with me when I did not go on the expressway. I understand how it can make him so mad and impatient, but I just could not do it at the time. He tells me I am ridiculous and no one else has this problem in the world. I felt miserable all day and I really want to overcome this fear. Can anyone relate to this or am I really crazy? What can I do to get over this? I feel like I am not part of the human race not being able to do this. Any suggestions would be helpful and please don't laugh at me. Thanks
