effexor xr ................should I??????

Della's right about not letting weight gain be a deciding factor - especially if something works. There are other healthy ways to relieve the weight gain and it is often temporary anyway. I would caution one thing about Effexor. IT IS NOT A LONG TERM DRUG !!!!!!! My original Dr did not tell this when I was put on it 5 yrs ago for a different issue. When I moved and found a new Dr, he was very upset that I had been on it so long. He CAREFULLY weaned me offit but I had horrible withdrawls for 2 months after being off it. I was on 150 mg of the Effexor XR and I am soooooo glad to be off it. Too many Drs don't realize it is NOT intended for long term use. PLEASE BE CAREFUL anyone who's on it.

Hi All, I do realize what the weight gain is like. Since Labor Day, I've gained 29 lbs (+/-). My lungs are in Rehab since I have quit smoking as of June 15th, 2004. My 7th smoke-free month is soon. While I would like to lose the added weight, the point I was trying to make was, don't change meds just BECAUSE you're gaining weight. Talk to your Dr. When you've found a Dr. that you trust, you should be able to talk to her/him about anything. Including everything from fears to lack of sexual desire. My Fibro Doc is one of the best. I have had 1 visit with a psychiatrist to get an assessment. I will meet my Counselor for the results and my course of treatment on the 26th of Jan. By no means was I trying to offend. Della

Hi I was wondering what kind of side effects did anybody experience on Effexor. I was Celexa and have been off it for a few months. I choose to go off cause of weight gain like almost 60lbs. Not happy about it. Well the only thing I take now is Activan which I have had a presciption for over 10yrs it is only this past few months I have been acutally using it. I find that I am not progressing because of panic attacks and anticipatory anxiety. I also have depression and agoraphobia. I think I am becoming more of GAD to since I worry about everything when I go out. Cars people how far from home, the list goes on and on. Well I am rambling now. Sorry. Just thinkin of going on Effexor since I have heard good things about it. TitaMarie

Hi Chris, Della and all, Just a couple of points from another perspective. Della I agree with most of what you are saying. Unfortunatley weight gain is a problem for a number of people while taking these drugs. Although it is a side effect and the meds are dispensed to treat our symptoms, these side effects can upset some people by adding something else to be depressed about, such as weight gain amongst other things. Is it a top priority in the beginning? no but at some point if it bothering you and it is making your anxiety worse, self esteem low etc. then you should consider changing your medications, after a consultation with your Dr. I used Paxil for 4 years. I know at this point it is right for me to make the change. Also I have always been told to trust and respect my physicians, BUT if the relationship is not there and I do not feel at ease with my Dr. then to change. It all depends on the Dr. I have been lucky and only had one Dr. who could never remember who I was or why I was there until she read my file. You need to feel comfortable enough with your Dr. to explain how you are really feeling. If you feel like you are going crazy, and you don't feel comfortable enough to tell your Dr. that, because "heaven knows what they will think" then he/she may not be aware of how bad your symptoms are. Sometimes change is good and a different opinion can shed new light on a situation. So of course best case scenario, perfect relationship, you've given it a chance, stay with your Dr. if it is not working out change..... I wouldn't let a Dr. prescribe meds to my children if I didn't trust him/her, same goes for myself. Also so many of us are scared of taking these meds that are prescribed for us. It is so much easier when you have a realtionship with your Dr, where you can trust what he is prescribing, and you can have a discussion about it before you leave the office.

Chris, I don't have "surefire" answers for you. So far as whether or not Paxil is better? In my case I was allergic to it, and wound up in the ER 3-4 days of taking it. I broke out in huge red welps all over from head to toe, my throat was closing up and I could not breathe. I called my Dr and she told me to go to ER. Different people have a different metabolic rate, and I am on Synthroid 1mg to regulate my Thyroid hormones. I can only advise you to follow along with your Dr's orders and give it a week or so, or more. Be patient although I know it is difficult to do so. Trust your Dr. They are available to, and for you, and most have after hours "on-call" services. Della

Della how long have you been on effexor xr? How long did it take to kick in? Is it as good as paxil as far as panic ,etc? I went to see my Dr today she wants me to take 20 mg paxil for a week then quit that all together & go straight to 37.5 effexor for a week then 75 mg next, does the 75 on effexor feel like its comp. to paxil 40 mg to you? Thanks Della

Chris, I'd like to make a few observations , please. The first, medicine is dispensed to treat our illness and/or tame our symptoms. So what if a person gains a little (or a lot) weight. You can make changes in diet 2)You have to trust and respect your physician. If you feel the meds given, are not right for you, then you and your prescribing Doc need to sit down together and decide. This is how we discovered I was allergic to the Paxil and she put me on the Effexor. 3)Changing Doc's without just cause only puts you back to square one. It's possible that your dosage needs to be changed. Such as was my case. I was prescribed 75mg Effexor tablet and told my Doc it started off good, but by the end of the day, I felt its' effects had worn off. So she changed me to Effexor XR 75mg capsule. XR is extended release. 4)Expect your dosages to change. Get to know your Doc. Only they are able to track your progress. They know what you've tried and works for you. Bouncing from Doc to Doc doesn't help. What works for one individual is not always right for another. Metabolic rates vary. 5)When your dosages are changed, allow your system to adapt. Expect your dosages to change. (Mine did, as I expect it did with others in this Group.) Change is to be expected as your health improves. Expect your dosages to be "upped" until you reach the appropriate dose, which is right for you to maintain your corrct levels. 6)Sometimes dosages have to be changed due to certain circumstances. I was on Celebrex, changed to Vioxx that worked very well for me, when it was recalled. I then went to Bextra and because of all the drug controversy, my Doc opted to put me Mobic. Those of us with Fibromyalgia, Restless Leg Syndrome, and Arthritis have really been through changes in the past 3 months or so. I hope this has given you (and others) something to think about. I is my intention only to create an awareness of positive results or the consequences. Thank You Della

I am actaully on Paxil, but it is not working.so my Dr. is changing me over to Effexor. I am on 40 mg of Paxil and will take Effexor 37.5 mg for 2 weeks and then go up to 75mg. At that time I will start to decrease my Paxil. Dr. said I will be up to 150mg of Effexor before we are through, which is fine with me as long as it works. Apparently the side effects are not as bad as Paxil, HOWEVER you must take it with food because of nausea. I have Panic Disorder, GAD and PTSD. So far so good, I also take Ativan 2-3mg a day and Atenolo for PVC's (benign).

Yep, I have been on Effexor not for panic but for migraine headaches. When I was taking it, I felt kind of different. You know that feeling at the end of a yawn? It was like that all the time for me. A yawn felt exagerated! I do not know about you, but I tend to not like drugs that make me feel like I am not in control. I eventually got off the drug and am now on welbutrin which is also an anti-depressant. It has been fine so far, only been taking it for 1 1/2 weeks now. Of course, it has not helped me with the panic though. Hope this helps! David
