Major Panic While Driving

Hi Dave, I too have this panic/fear of driving as well, I didn't realize how many people actually do have the driving panic/fear thing until I went on to this site, after reading I finally joined on and am fairly new to this. I too won't drive on the freeway or over bridges and haven't for probably 20 years now, I won't even drive on the freeway too often or over bridges as a passenger. I know I have to deal with this problem, but it's something I've been avoiding for so long that it's going to take me a long time to overcome it once I decide to face it. Driving freeways and bridges is not my only fear but probably the most life interfering ones. I too feel like I'm going to loose control and have a fear of causing an accident. Your not alone, keep up the good work and don't avoid like I did as it will get worse. Good Luck!

I had the same problem. I have been doing exposure therapy. My first goal took me 3 months but I finally made it. I decided that it would take as long as it took. Now I'm doing another exposure therapy which only took me 3 weeks. I surprised myself how good it works. Right now I'm sticking to driving then I want to work on going to public places again. And I was really bad..there was a time that I had trouble going to my mailbox. My problems started when I lost my mother, and a lot of other stress issues like I was starting my own business without getting any emotional support from my husband in fact he just degraded me by saying things negative about starting my own business. He doesn't have much to do with me..I get all my hugs from my dog. I found out that I had adrenal exhaustion and I basically had no hormones...I started into peri-menopause, low blood sugar, etc. I changed my diet to brain food and started to practice relaxation and meditation. Plus I workout and read self-help books. I take Xanax everyday. Afer a year of this I feel an improvement. It took me a long time to get this bad so I know that it will take a long time to get back to normal. You can feel normal again...but you need to learn stress recovery. Your body is telling you to slow down and take time for yourself. The best book that I have read on this subject is Dancing with Fear by Dr. Paul Foxman Get this book..it will tell you why you are feeling so bad. Too many negative thoughts, too many thoughts at once, trying to please others and being too nice are just a few stressors.

Dave, Try the Panic Program. It is not talk therapy and can really improve your situation. It may help you gain control. Have you tried relaxation techniques? What about breathing techniques? Prepare by reducing your anxiety level as much as you can. Try a hot bath, some soothing music or a warm beverage, before bed? Tomorrow do sign up for the Panic Diary where you can record your daily level of anxiety. You can also find how helpful it is to use breathing techniques to help you deal with your panic and anxiety. The Panic Program can help you understand more and may help you go about challenging your thoughts. Hope this helps, Josie ______________________________ The Panic Center Support Team.

Hi, Dave. It's funny, I was just looking for jobs on-line. I moved to a new city and have to find a new job for the 1st time in 10 years! My problem is the same as yours. I can't stand to drive. I have the exact same sypmptoms as you. I never drive more than a mile from my house. Consequently, it's making my job propositons quite scarce, not to mention forging friendships and then having to tell them I don't drive. I decided to take a break from job hunting and get on this site and ask a similar question. How does anyone who can't drive, like myself, get a new job? I'd like to hear from others out there who might be in the same boat. Dave, I'm sorry to hear your job requires so much driving. Don't stop driving, though. That was the biggest mistake I made. I made a mountain out of what was just a molehill. Take deep breaths. Keep driving. Good luck. Katie J

Hello all I'm wondering if anyone can help or give suggestions to me on my problem. My biggest and worst panic attacks come from driving; Especially on the highway. I'll get so freaked out it feels like I'm blacking out, or losing touch with the world. It's even worse in bumper to bumper traffic where I feel like I'm trapped. The next exit is several miles up, and there's cars sandwiched in on both sides. The problem is that my job requires me to drive in these situations almost daily. I've just been forcing myself, and it's almost unbearable at times. Anyone have suggestions, or things they've done that helped them through it? I'm really feeling desperate and mad at myself over this.
