If you would spend a lot of time making a great gift for someone else, I would like to challenge you to write down the kind of rewards your BEST friend would deserve if SHE quit smoking. Write down which days, which weeks would be most appropriate for you to acknowledge, and what would you give her? Then, when you have your list, go down the list to the days/weeks you have accomplished and give yourself that gift, that item, that reward, and think of it as rewarding YOUR BEST FRIEND, because you are now acting as your own best friend, by prolonging your life and going smoke free. Believe me when I say I have struggled over "deserving" a reward, especially since I've done this before, but I realize that succeeding at anything is all about positive attitude, and what could be more positive than that I (you) deserve applause for even starting, let alone getting so far. Thanks everyone for the great advice! It's strange though, to have to coax yourself into believing you deserve something nice! I'd spend a fortune or take ages making a great gift for someone else. Its hard to put the focus on yourself but it shouldn't be and hopefully that'll be another benefit of quitting, to put myself first sometimes! Ladies, learn to treat yourselves! As Moms or wives we have learned to always put others first. That's why we're shy to treat ourselves. You need to learn to treat yourself! It's all about rejuvenation! You got some great advice.. I also felt a little guilty.. but then readin in the program and on the boards... we "rewarded" ourselves with cigarettes..when we took a break, when we finished a job or chore, etc. If you CAN.. take the money you would spend on cigarettes daily.. and put in a coffe can, or jar or little box.. then when you want a reward.. voila.. you have money. you can buy a little reward or you can save up for a big reward. So if it was 5.00 a day at the end of 30 days ... you have 150.00 It adds up quickly. You are worth it.. you care enough about yourself to quit.. so care now to take care of yourself with that bubble bath.. I did little things the first few days.. then I went to weeks.. Sometimes it was a bite or 2 of a brownie .. I bought a new water bottle ..1.99 just something to make you smile.. it can be sitting and listening to your favorite CD without interruption. Oh, just hang in there it will be okay. Rewards were and still are hard for me. I did set a big one for my six months and I got it!!! Mr. Kitty, a new kitten and every time he purrs he reminds me of why I quit. He is my living reward. I understand the feeling like you don't deserve it, but we do. Even if it a walk alone, a candy bar, coffee with a friend or checking a book out of the library. They don't have to expensive, just a little something to say 'GOOD JOB'. Paula. I also wanted to add that truly...Ive been in a much calmer mood this 3rd week of quitting then in the first two weeks and MUCH calmer and kinder than EVER before in quitting. Some people quit one time and thats it..Other people it may take a time or two to get it right. Seems every other time I quit I felt that I was fighting every single day (for a long time) to remain quit. Somehow this time, (went cold turkey), there really isnt a fight. Im embracing as much as possible everyday the freedom of not smoking..So this way, I believe instead of wearing out from *fighting* and then eventually giving up, I will enjoy each and every experience as a non smoker. Keep giving yourself those little rewards because that's an important issue for quitters insofar as we always "rewarded" ourselves with a cigarette after we triumphed at something. Don't get carried away with that guilt thing!! Watch yer pennies and the pounds will look after themselves and all that...change this one thing in your life and keep the focus on that and not worry yourself to death about being a few quid in the hole...
