I am 34 yrs. old.
When I relapsed my panic attack came exactly one week to the day bef. my cycle. The next month I noticed the anxiety became intolerable two weeks bef. and my PVC's became worse, The following month I again had increased anxiety 2 weeks bef. and then had a panic attack exactly one week bef...
For 6 years although I was irregular I always knew when I was close to my time as my PVC's would increase and go away a few days after my start. This time though they just didn't go away.
My Dr. is trying me on BCP's, 1st month on them and I had no increased anxiety prior to my period.
We shall see what happens over the next few months.
I feel it is homone related also- my panic attacks are much more severe about a week before my cycle begins.
i am 35, and i would like to have my hormone levels checked. Of course everyone says oh you're too young, but i do know you can be in perimenopause, which can start in your 30's, but it will not show up in any test. you'll have to read up that perimenopause- it's very interesting!!
Thank you all for that. Its really very interesting, I hadn't heard of the condition. Interesting tho' that medical treatment would be the same as anxiety anyway, prozac etc. Also interesting from my point of view is mention of estrogen patch, and possible benefit of using it. Thanks a lot
I am currently taking Zoloft 25mg. daily. And Xanax as needed. I hardly ever have to take the Xanax. I took a couple as my period approached this last week, but I think it was because I was anticipating feeling bad, and THAT made me anxious! :confuse: I ended up doing really well. The way I had felt before was very tense and scared all the time. Almost the same feeling you would have if you lost your child at the grocery store or something like that. Plus obessive worrying. At first they gave me Effexor XR. That seemed to do fine the first six weeks but then as my period approached the Effexor seemed to stop working. That's when I started looking on the internet for different medicines and found out about PMDD. Here's a link to the website I found: http://www.pmdd.factsforhealth.org/what/index.html
There is alot of good info on there. From what I understand (and I'm not a doctor, so someone correct me if I'm wrong) it's not the female hormones that DIRECTLY cause the symptoms of anxiety. It's the strong link between, and the effect female hormones have on seritonin. Here's another link to a page on their site that has more info. If you have Adobe Acrobat open Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: A Guide (this is pretty much everything that is on the above website, but in printable form.) http://www.pmdd.factsforhealth.org/help/reading.html
It's not overwhelming to read. It has info on everything from symptoms, to how it's diagnosed to, meds that have been FDA approved to treat it. Like I said I did fine this month (this was my first period since switching to Zoloft from EffexorXR) so I'm hoping that next month goes as smoothly. :) I hope you get some relief soon! I know how bad it feels and how frustrating it can be.

I don't know how to edit the posts but it should say that my doctor did NOT think it could be harmful... I accidentally wrote that my doctor thought it could be harmful. oops..
I definitely believe for women, there is likely a hormone connection.
When I first started having panic attacks ( a year ago) I successfully treated them (without any episode for over a year) with natural progesterone cream. It really helped me up until I had a traumatic event (father's health-- he is dying).
Now I think it's no longer hormones but brain chemicals attributing it.
I know you can purchase natural progesterone cream (no synthetic hormones!!) at Wal Mart or GNC. You may want to talk with your doctor first but my doctor didn't seem to think it could be harmful (wasn't sure it would be helpful either).
Thats really interesting. Did your doctor prescribe anything for you ? Did you have tests to get this diagnosis ? Do you just have to put up with it ? I have found some research papers written that suggest a link, written by the Institute of Psychiatry, but they are fairly mammoth, so I'm still wading through them !!
Hi! I'm 34 and have had problems with anxiety off and on for about 8-9 years now. My latest problem was three months ago when I stopped breastfeeding my son. I was feeling fine up until then. I had my first period with no problem. The next month right before it was time for me to start I felt really anxious and even had a small episode of derealization (I just felt spaced out). It went away fairly quickly but the next month it happened again, only much worse. Long story short...from researching on the web and talking to my doctor, we've come to the conclusion that I most likely am suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). This may not be what you're suffering from but it might be worth mentioning to your doctor. I had never made the connection between my periods and my anxiety level until I stopped breastfeeding this last time. The hormone shift during that time is pretty huge, as I'm sure it is when your nearing menopause. Hope this helps, :)
