help for panic attacks while driving

Hi Carolyn, What type of meds are you on for anxiety? Maybe your dosage needs to "upped". I have the same problem, although I have not had an accident since my anxiety began. Have you spoken to your Dr about techniques to overcome this dilemma? I live a busy tourist area and have learned to make my appt's at a time convenient for me and when to be on the road. My Fibro doc just "upped" my Effexor XR to 225mg from 150mg just yesterday, we'll see if this helps. How are you sleeping? Anytime we don't get enough sleep, it's hard to concentrate or perform everyday tasks if we're sleep deprived. My Fibro Doc just put another dose onto my Trazadone from 300mg to 450mg. Obviously, I have to take both of these meds before bedtime. I usually take them about an hour before, after my shower and my clean "jammies", with warm milk. (The milk coats your stomach.) Are you on any meds right now, or have you talked to your Dr. about this? The best description for me and panic attacts is climbing out of my own skin. Can anyone else relate to that or is it just me?

Hi, I also have panic attacks while highway driving, especially busy highways, bridges, tunnels. I'm OK on secondary roads, or for short distances on the highway, when I know I'm close to an exit or a road with a good breakdown lane in case I need to stop. I've been taking Zoloft for a few years now, it helped with panic attacks in malls, crowded areas. But the highway is still my problem as well.

I never used to get them while driving, however now i feel like i am getting them more frequently and more severe while driving. I usually just pull over and try to wait it out, but that doesnt always help. The other day i got one so bad that i pulled into a parking lot, cried for an hour, and then called my mother to come and get me. 22 years old and calling my mother to come and get me... I felt like an idiot. I really have no advice except to say to be safe, and if you feel one coming on, get off the road

Good News! I used to be so afraid while driving and I got a lot of panic attacks, I wouldn't be able to drive through tunnels, over overpasses, bridges, etc. It was almost as if my mind was looking for reasons to panic. However, now I moved Los Angeles, and it is pretty well known that it is one of the places with the worst traffic in America. Strangely though I am doing so much better! I recently went on a five hour drive by myself over the holidays and I was ok. A few months ago I never thought that I would be able to do that but somehow I managed. When I came to the point where I had to confront my fear head on I realized I had to deal with it somehow, I could not go into panic mode. I had one of my friends on the cell phone with me so in case I did get afraid they would calm me down, and that helped so much. But now that I managed to acomplish that little feat I feel ready to handle the bigger ones. I don't think that I am "cured" but I am learning how to control my emotions more. I think the key is taking baby steps and using those accomplishments to work your way up. Good luck everyone!

This may sound strange to you, but driving my car helps to calm me down when I am panicking. I will describe why I like to drive and hopefully it will help to give you a different outlook. I enjoy driving because I feel that I can take myself wherever I want to go. I can listen to the radio and have time to myself. When I am in my car I am not stuck in a social situation where others can ask me questions or bother me. The car is more or less a "shield" for me.

I'm afraid I don't have much advice but I can empathize. I have not driven on a freeway in about 9 or 10 years. i will not drive to places I haven't been before. I don't like to drive at night and avoid it when possible unless it's just to the local Target or grocery store. I haven't used this site much yet--I'm going to look at it more after the holidays--but it looks similar to a program I tried several years ago that did help. I didn't finish the program which is one of the reasons I still have problems driving. I would definately recommend this site. One thing with breathing-if you are having trouble taking a deep breath, place one hand on your shoulder and one hand on your stomach. Breathe in deeply-you want your hand on your stomach to move and the one on your shoulder not to move. Obviously, don€™t try this when you are driving. Try it before you drive. What you are doing is trying to get your breathing better (I€™m having trouble explaining this. What I was told is that when I go into panic mode I start breathing more shallow. By doing this exercise I have been able to get myself breathing better. ) After doing this a couple of times and being able to do it without using your hands you can be able to breathe this way in the car to help you get your breath. For me, I take a few regular short breaths first before trying to get a deep breath. Hope this isn€™t too confusing. Also, practice relaxing your muscles. One good way to do this is to tighten up all your muscles and then relax them. Do each body part one at a time. Tighten your fingers, relax them. Tighten your arms, relax them. Etc. Then when you are in the car, it can sometimes help you relax your muscles and not feel so tight. One more thing I have noticed with myself is that I find myself tightening my jaw. This increases my anxiety. When I concentrate on relaxing it, it helps. Hope things get better. You can also look into counseling. That can help some people if you find the right counselor.

Scaredtodrive, No need to apologize! You have come to the right place! Please continue to share your thoughts with us. There are many people within this support group that share the same questions and concerns as you. We are all a group of individuals who support each other. We look forward to hearing more from you in the future. :) If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests. These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. We also have developed a Panic Program. This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above. Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead. These tests may or may not be for you but they are "free". If you have any question or concerns with our €œTOOLS€, you can contact us at support@paniccenter.net. We are the Support Specialist for The Panic Center and are open to any questions or concerns you may have. Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
