WOW. I wish I had gained only 15 pounds. I slapped on a whopping 50 pounds! I took ten off, then put it right back on. It's odd because I don't eat fattening stuff. I'm active. I should not have gained anything. But I did and have to deal with that next. Wazz, Quitting will slow your metabolism down. This usually amounts to your body being able to burn 200 calories less than usual, however due to an increase in energy you may now be more active. You may want to take advantage of this new found energy to help you build muscle as this is heavier than fat and much healthier! Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

I don't own a scale so even though I knew I was gaining, I didn't know how much. Early on, like the first week or two, I was weighing myself at the gym and got a little freaked out that I had gained five pounds (I think) in the first 10 days of my quit. So, I quit weighing myself because I knew all that mattered to me at the time was not smoking. I didn't want to be worrying about weight too. Anyway, I figured I was going to be a whale by the time I hit three months. Well, I still have some time before I get to the three month mark, but as of yesterday I have gained 15 lbs. The good news is it seems like I've leveled off. I would say I've stayed at the same weight for about a month now...roughly. Since I was pretty skinny, the weight doesn't bother me. The fact that some of my favorite clothes aren't fitting so well kinda bugs me but I suppose it's a fair trade. I am thinking you'll gain some. Almost everyone I know who's quit has gained some and it seems like the average is about the same as me at about 15 lbs. I'm glad that's a good thing for you. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 71 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,130 Amount Saved: $415.35 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 9 Mins: 15 Seconds: 44

Wazz, What I've read is that our metabolism slows down for a while after we quit smoking, so you should gain some. Im looking forward to gaining some weight. I eat somewhat healthy and Im in good shape. But if I could put on 15-20 lbs that would be ok with me. So gaining weight should be easier now that I no longer smoke! I hope this is the case. thanks for the reply :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 20 Amount Saved: $5.40 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 4 Mins: 57 Seconds: 45

Hi Wazz, I'm not sure I completely understand your question, but I'll try. I believe that it's most important to eat in a healthy manner. Always eat some breakfast with protein. Eat protein of some kind at every meal. Eat only whole grains...none of that white bread or white rice. Eat a healthy snack between each meal -- cheese and good crackers, carrots, some yogurt perhaps. Stay away from processed food...in other words, food made by a machine and put in a box. Make the focus of your eating as natural as possible. You may find that you will gain some weight over the next few weeks, but not everyone does. I'd love to gain some weight. Should I gain because I am hungry more often and eat more or should I gain just as results of quitting do to physical changes in my body.
