Michael, I have also noticed that if I do something it will short-circuit for a while my anxiety. For instance, if I am anxious in the house and walk outside to the back deck or upstairs to my neighbors it wipes out my anxiety for a bit. I wonder why that is? rachele
Tony, I live in Atlanta, but born in raised in NYC. [STILL AN AVID YANKEES FAN!!! by the way]When my panic starts creeping in I actually try to do different things to take my mind off of the panic; so actually I step out of whatever routine I'm in. For example this morning I had moderate anxiety. Rather than just lie and bed and try deep breathing, music, or self-talk, I got on this site to update my panic log and to read other entries. I don't know if that's strange, but, it works. I am relatively new to this site, but, since joining I have found that the more I talk and write about my attacks the better I feel. My attacks have actually decreased in severity and frequency since joining this site. I think just reading and responding to entries on this site reinforces in my mind that there isn't anything wrong.
By the way I have walked as far as from WTC to 42nd st. and I loved it. I really miss that living in Atlanta. It may sound crazy but walks like that are relaxing...as long as it's not late at night...LOL.
Tony , I live and work in nyc as well. I know what you mean but I normally walk home from work - use to be 5 miles when i worked down at the world financial ctr....it ended up being the best part of the day.....its all a matter of getting use to things and your body balance going back to normal....this disorder sucks big time!
Tony, I don't know if I particularly follow routines but I do know that I don't like going new places. As you say, perhaps its just out of my safety zone. Also, when I am going through an anxious period I do tend to do the same things every day, for instance, turn the tv on first thing when I wake up. I won't do anything at all new or go anywhere new when in an anxious period either. Go figure. I'm trying to work on staying in the minute and saying to myself that at this moment I am ok. Rachele

Just a basic question. I was wondering if all of you perhaps rely to heavily on routines? I know I do. Let me give you an example:
I live in New York City and work in the Wall Street area. Normally I get out of work, catch my bus, and I'm on my way to my apartment just outside Manhattan. Yesterday I decided I wanted to look for a pair of sneakers that I had been eyeing for a while; so I walked uptown (quite a ways actually). I figured that it'd be good to get some of the adrenaline out of me with some walking. Everything was pretty much okay but I did have a strange feeling poking it's way into my head. I was thinking that this walk almost felt like a dream because I was seeing things and doing something that I normally don't do. In one way it was nice but in another way it felt really strange. That's when the semi-panic sets in: "Is this real"? "is everything okay"? Things like that. And these feelings stayed with me throughout the night, from time to time.
Long story, I know. Anyway, what do you all think about this? When you break your own routines do you ever feel a bit panicky or disoriented? Questioning things? I guess it's all bout comfort zones? I dunno. maybe it's just about accepting whatever you do and wherever you are.
