Hi Stickin, I quit, like Tresa, because of my granddaughter (nicknamed Lolly,) who reminded me how bad it was for me, as if I did not know already!!! I am heading towards three years quit and every day I am reminded of how much stronger and better I feel since I quit. The main thing is the recovery of my freedom and self-esteem after 40 years of smoking, and many attempts at quitting. Funnily enough, health reasons were not uppermost in my mind at the start, but now I am reaping huge rewards on that score too! All in all it's been so worth it!!! NEVER LOOK BACK, THE FUTURE IS AHEAD!!! Lolly. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/25/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 996 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 34,860 Amount Saved: 4,980.00 Life Gained: Days: 142 Hrs: 10 Mins: 1 Seconds: 35

I stay quit by building a bridge everyday. I am aware, because I am an addict, that there is a gap in my existance. Something that is missing. I have traversed that gap in the past by smoking. But that bridge across the span is no longer in service. It has been demolished by my own will. The gap once bridged by smoking has not gone away, just as a river dosen't dissappear simply because a span falls down. Remaining smoke free for me is a matter of building new bridges everyday. I am mindful to treat my body well by taking in vitamins and supplements. I try not to become to tired. When I am hungry I eat. When I am tired I sleep. If I am lonely, I seek solace. I remind myself on a daily basis that smoking never solved a problem. It was never a strong bridge. It was more like a tight rope. I could get across to the other side, but the risk factor made the crossing to dear. The toll extracted was a severe diminishment of mind and body. I now choose other bridges for crossing over. nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 236 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,080 Amount Saved: $1,652.00 Life Gained: Days: 43 Hrs: 1 Mins: 42 Seconds: 30

Wow Stickin... I guess I gave us smoking because I love my family. I remain smoke free most times and in unusual ways. Sometimes it's easy when I share the benefits with my family or just pretend I'm like them, with no addiction problem... Sometimes it's just me that's awake and dealing with my addiction... So? I improvise. It's entertaining when it's not you. But when you improvise because you have to, it's real. No, no, NO! Then, I realize I can't inhale a full breath. Huge bummer. What if I quit this poison? Hmmm. Breath regained somewhat. Big cold beers might trigger me... Walks alone in the early morninglight might trigger me... it depends on where I am on this planet. Hey... but if I were "Stickin to it" on the SSC... and having some trouble -- I think I would read all this stuff - go to bed - and post in the morning (cough free:) well, it might take a few days - but? the cough and ickys will come. I promise... Write back for more truth and info... I could go over and over my reasons for quitting, and when my grandson of 21 hugged me and told me he loved that i dident stink any more and he said my skin looked so much better, i thought that right there was worth the struggle i had quitting, I dont see any good reasons to smoke, only postive reasons to Quit Tresa :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/8/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1835 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 36,700 Amount Saved: $6,422.50 Life Gained: Days: 258 Hrs: 19 Mins: 2 Seconds: 35

Wow, excellent thread for re-affirmation! Thanks, Stickin! I was FINALLY persuaded to quit by pretty superficial things, actually. The ridiculous price & the toll it was taking on my looks. That's right, not my lungs or heart, my looks. I was still deep enough in denial that I refused to consider what I was doing to my health! I stay quit by being grateful every single morning that, even though it wasn't my motivation, I quit in time to make a difference to the rest of my life. I also stay quit by always looking at not smoking as a positive thing, a gift I gave myself & the people who love me. I never see it as being deprived or giving something up. NEVER. I also don't take my quit for granted, and try to always stay on guard for junkie thoughts or triggers. It's work, staying quit, but I'm happy to be doing it rather than wishing I could, or worse, wishing I had before it was too late. Of course, all of you help me so much, too. You help me to stay positive & happy about quitting, give me things to think about & watch out for & of course I get what I want by helping others get what they want! I am 100% sure that I will never smoke again, ever. I am a non-smoker, so why would I? The positives are innumerable. I like myself way better, I feel that so many more things are possible now. The positive attitude has spilled over into other parts of my life & I'm a happier person overall. Better sleep, more energy, smell WAY better. I'm freakin' gorgeous (as we all know!), my kids are not only proud of me but no longer EMBRRASSED. Now if I embarrass them, it's on purpose, not because I smell or because I have to sneak off & smoke somewhere no matter what we're doing! I could go on for days, really. There is jsut no downside to this! WHAT PERSUADED ME TO GIVE UP SMOKING: Many of us never gave it up just for US.....but....... Sometimes we love something else more than we love ourselves. I'm sure my reason isn't the usual...but I'm answering honestly. I know I love God more than me.....and that He loved me more than I love myself. He made a fellowship with me and a home "in" me. The past year or so scriptures seemed to "personally" speak to me about what I was doing to myself whom God loved and died for. I learned that life and what I do really isn't about ME.....but it is about Him. I wasn't quitng to earn love from Him. I already had that. But love brings a natural desire to please Him. These are just a few scriptures. There is way to many to make mention of. It wasn't my only reason....but .....He became my primanry focus in this quit. Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." (2Corinthians 6:18-7:1) "Don't you know that you...yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?" (1cor 3:16) "Don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you....whom you have received from God? YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN; You were bought with a price. Therefore.....honor God with your body." (1cor 6:19) HOW DO I REMAIN SMOKE FREE AND WHAT DO I DO? : I find it is easier when I am focused on God than on me. ME was addcited to cigarettes and liked them. Me is all about satisfying what I want. When I'm focused on Him I see things from a more spiritual nature rather than a fleshly one. It wasn't a cure all....but it helped very much. Bible reading and devotionals helped me more times than I can recall. Other avenues I found....(like peaceful brisk walks...finding special teas....and taking more time to see good things in life) smoothed the rough edges. CONFIDENCE LEVEL: I will be 7months Sunday. I have more days behind me than in front of me to complete a year. There are days I rate myself a 7 and other days I rate myself an 8!! I hope next month I will be closer to a 9 and by years end a solid 10!! WHAT COULD MAKE ME START UP? The rememberance of pleasure and relaxation. Also...time I spend with my really good girlfriend. Thank goodness she lives in Florida!!!!! She is coming for a visit early October. It will yet be another test. REALIZED POSITIVES: A cleaner conscience in regards to my faith. Less worry about diseases from smoking. Taking pleasure in being a better example for others. Having more respect for myself in chosing the right thing to do. I should put....added money.....but I'm still looking for it. Seeing through your eyes, What persuaded you to give up smoking? How is it that you remain smoke free? That is, how do you do it? If you have already past the one month milestone, what is your confidence level for remaining smoke free for two months, three months, six months, nine months, and one year? (Extremely, fairly, not much at all) If already past the year milestone, what might trigger you to start back up? By staying smoke free, what positives have you realized so far?
