Yeah my doctor put me on Effexor after a bad experience with Paxil. The Paxil seemed to make me more nervous and irritable. It was terrible. Plus they had me on a anti Phsycotic for scary obsscessive thoughts. I quit taking Paxil and the Risperadal and they put me on Effexor. I had some major Depression and it has really helped. I also take ativan. I have tried Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil and I have found that the Effexor is working the best right now.

Hi, Dan. I hate to even describe the symptoms I had because I don't want to scare anyone who's already taking paxil. So, let me just say, this is what happened to me. It might not be the same for others. It took about a month or so for me to really feel better after going off paxil. I had very bad suicidal thoughts (which I've never had before), I was very tense and angry. I also had non-stop anxiety and I couldn't eat or sleep. This happened about 3 years ago. Once I got past the withdrawal, I was put back on Prozac. I recently have been put on klonopin for break-through attacks. Please don't go off your meds just because of my bad experience. It may not be the same for everyone. Consult your doctor if you aren't feeling better soon, though. If you aren't on it too long, it might not be that bad to withdraw. I was on Paxil for 3 years. Good luck and let me know if there's anything else I can do. Katie

Hi Katie, You've brought up a point that I am interested in, Paxil withdrawal. I've been taking paxil for about a month and it seems to be working, but i am concerned about the withdrawal symptoms if I have to go off of it. What were your symptoms and how long did they last? best, Dan

I can tell you from experience that going off Paxil was the hardest thing I've ever done. I was on it for about 2 years when it stopped working for me. Actually, it never worked that well for me to begin with. The withdrawal was something I've never experienced before and it was a scary time for me and my husband. Unfortunately, drugs like paxil, prozac, zoloft, etc. take a while to get through your system and really start to work. When I started back on Prozac, my doctor prescribed xanax to go with it. I just had to take it for a while until the prozac got back in my system. You should ask your doctor about maybe taking xanax or klonopin in conjunction with your new meds to ease the transition. I would like to say, however, that there are probably other's who have had great experiences on Paxil. I'm definitely not saying paxil is a bad drug. It just didn't work for me. Good luck and talk to your Dr. Katie

Hi Christina, There are others that can give a better answer on this than I can, I'm sure. However, I just thought I'd tell you what I've heard from my dr. If you take Xanax (anti anxiety meds) they can work very quickly but antidepressants (lexapro, paxil, zoloft, etc.) take time to get into your system. Some can take up to four weeks!! When I had stopped taking Zoloft & had to go back on my dr told me 1-2 weeks (I had only stopped taking them for several days) within a week I felt better, 2 weeks I was pretty good, but it was about 4 weeks before I felt 100% again. According to my dr they are very slow acting drugs. He also says that is one reason they are not addictive, because you get no immediate feelings from them like you would with Xanax or other antianxiety meds. Chanda

Took paxil for 3 years. did fine for 2 years on 10mg, than the attacks got worse. so i was switched to paxil cr 50mg. after another year it stopped working. so about 3 weeks ago i was put on lexapro 10mg and xanax 1mg. needless to say i was going on a cruise 3 days into my med changes. i some how managed i took the lexapro and the xanax only at night since night time triggers my attacks. i guess i made the ship my "safe zone" and when it was time to get off to do an excursion i lost it. i had to be escoted back to the ship by customs. there the ship dr gave me 10mg of valium. it knocked me out. anyway i had 1 set back on the trip and never got off again until we got to port. the lexapro does not seem to be working since i've been home. dr says give it time. i want to know if i change meds if there is something that will start to work that day and not take 14 days to go through my system...christina
