Quitmyster So sorry I missed this last week..been busy with a guest here I am so happy to hear the camping trip went well in terms of the boys stepping up. Too bad about the weather at the end, but glad you all were safe. Sounds like a great time overall and an ending that will be talked about for years probably. Proud of you for not smoking -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 100 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,000 Amount Saved: $680.00 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 0 Mins: 43 Seconds: 43

Quitmyster, Wow! It sounds like you had quite the trip! I'm glad that other than the scary storm things went well. Looks like you passed this test with flying colors. Congrats! Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

Hi everyone - Well, we made it back from the camping trip. The first two days were wonderful. Everything you could hope for - lots of cooperation from the guys (they set up the tent by themselves even though it took them three trys), beautiful, cool evenings and mornings and warm afternoons. Three of the four, wanted to learn how to cook on the Coleman Stove and that was great. They ate well, and had a blast tubing and swimming in the river. And of course they built a fire and made smoores in the evening. Then the rains came, DOWNpouRED starting at 2:00 a.m. (second evening on site) and continued to rain until 4:30 a.m. Turned on the radio at 5:30 a.m. and the meterologist was apologizing like mad and advising that severe storms were moving in quickly with 60 mph winds. He estimated we had 3 hours to evacuate. We packed up our soaking things in one hour and were on the road. That turned out to be an excellent choice as the weather moved in within one-half hour and anyone still there, was stuck there. The guys did an excellent job getting things picked up and put in plastic bags (no need to roll up wet items). We did have to drive with some very high winds, but were able to make it through the high water crossings before they became blocked off and too dangerous to pass. Guess I could have thought about smoking a cig., but never did, given the urgency of the situation. The funny part is, that once I made it home safely and was unpacking, I realized the matches were soaking wet too, so even if I had wanted to resort to smoking, I couldn't have. And i did not have any cigs with me to tempt me. So, I guess it's safe to say that we had a great time except for the quick departure. But even then, I was very proud of them for keeping calm and getting everything done as quickly as possible. I hope all of you have been doing great with your quit. Thanks again for your great advice, support and prayers. QuitMyster

Yes, Quit Life hands us disappointments, oftentimes in the hands of those closest to us. But, that is true whether we smoke or not. The closest I've come to slipping was in reaction to that kind of thing - twice, same person. I have responded to that person the best I know how and now have decided to give the relationship a rest. Maybe for a little while, maybe forever. But in the process I definitely had to use almost everything in my toolbox to keep from smoking. Breathing, frenetic self-talk (I will not smoke, I will not smoke, I will not smoke, Smoking will not change the situation, Smoking will not change the situation, Smoking will not change the situation, etc, etc), a yell or two by myself, walking, and then some relaxation and my form of praying. During these two episodes, and another notable one with my son, I realized how much I had depended on cigarettes to avoid feeling emotions I didn't want to feel. Now I try to get under the anger to see what I really am feeling. Not always a happy feeling, but you know what? It hasn't destroyed me, and in the end, when I can express the real emotion, or at least acknowledge it to myself if I think I will get another hurtful response, I feel better. And then I feel even better because I didn't cave to the smoke. Hope you have found a way to deal with your sister's latest action. And great to hear you and the boys are excited and looking forward to the trip. I wish I was there..I'd go! -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 85 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,400 Amount Saved: $578.00 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 22 Mins: 38 Seconds: 9

alohakeia- Thank You - I'll let you how this trip goes late next week. I appreciate you're understanding the triggers. Each day, when I sign in to this website, I review the suggestions of how to keep the quit. Avoidance, remove yourself from the situation, etc..but the difference with this issue, is that there is no way to avoid it - just deal with it. Guess it's a good way for me to learn about new tools and how to use them. Disappointing, just the same. On a much happier note: My guys are ready for this trip and confident about how things will go. And I'm feeling much better about things to, thanks to some time and thought, and the wonderful insight and support of you and all of the other members. serenity Those were great suggestions! Quitmyster I think if you give them the chance, your sons will take pride in both being more capable, as well as taking care of their mom a little. I'm sure you will review the safety rules around the water. I always think of that because our camping trips always involve the ocean. And you're right, it is so much easier when there's an extra set of eyes and arms. I know what you mean about old emotional patterns being a trigger. Because they are not triggers we face (hopefully) very frequently when we first quit, like driving, after dinner, etc, when we are first faced with them, they take us by surprise. The triggers, that is. What I have done is walk away from responding immediately, doing some "quiet time" by myself to figure out how to lovingly respond to the disappointment. I figure getting more worked up and angrier will only increase my desire for a cig to calm myself down. I look at it as an opportunity to practice my self-calming strategies as well as a spiritual challenge. Then I either compose a letter, email, or talk to the person directly using "I" messages, telling them how I feel. In your case, I guess how your boys feel too. if you anticipate an angry or uncaring response, it might be best to just write, so you don't get upset again. Be proud of yourself for not immediately reaching for a cig to soothe yourself. You're doing great! I hope you and the boys have an awesome camping trip. I can't wait to hear about it when you get back. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 84 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,360 Amount Saved: $571.20 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 19 Mins: 23 Seconds: 9

serenity2- Wow! Those are some awesome suggestions. Had a while to ponder and find that I'm coming up with some great ideas. i.e. volunteer to cook and do dishes or you'll have to dance with me at the Saturday night dance at the Pavillion. LOL! Can you hear the moans from across the ocean? You know, the "coming of age" suggestion is awesome. Super Idea. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'll have to work out the details in my mind. You sound like a super good Mom, so I'll just send along every best wish to you and your family for continued health and happiness. Hi, just thought I would answer as a fellow single mum. I've never really had any form of support as such and so from my girls were pretty young, I made a lot of our "activities" (especially the essential, more boring "must do" ones) into a group effort as much as I possibly could and DELEGATED! lol. Delegation I am sure, is the key to a single parent life-style. When the guys have picked up a bit from the disappointment, why don't you get them all involved in planning for the trip and allocating roles? Do some practice stuff before hand. Like, putting up the tent. Meals - who will be head cook on which meal? Even young kids can do some form of breakfast that saves mum. Who will dish-wash and when? Do rotas etc. Brainstorm and get the guys' ideas. Have some kind of "reward" system and make it all as much of a game and a "now we're all growing up we are SO capable" type of thing. When you're a single parent, you can get so used to having to do it all and keep all the balls in the air, we forget they egt older and that they need to learn how to be independet and stuff. Maybe you could turn it into a coming of age, type manly thing? Be kind to yourself; admit others can and should pitch in; and keep the quit.
