Anyone done Cognitive Behavior Therapy??

Hi there I have suffered from panic disorder for 18 months. Elsewhere on the site I have posted messages with my story. I can basically just say: cognitive behaviioural therapy is wonderful. I tried the panic program on this site and it worked wonders for me. In terms of books to read: there are quite a few available. After running a general search on the Net, I came across a number of good websites too. Although I found knowledge to be power, I also discovered that very few of the readings tell us that we must not have compassion with this illness. It was only after someone posted a message here saying exactly that, that I realized that I had far too much compassion with this disorder that threatened to take over my life. http://www.season.org , for example, is one good site. Elsewhere on the panic centre site (under links and resources)is a list of very helpful sites as well.

Overcoming Panic, Franklin is the book i am doing. Its great. http://www.aps.psychsociety.com.au/publications/books/ default.asp#ordering You can order it from the above link. Its an Australian Psychologists Society publication, but they ship overseas. Prices are listed in Australian $ ($1 AUS = approx $0.75 US), so that book is around $30 US + postage.

Hi chimpmaster Do you have any suggestions on books that I could get? I did some checking via the internet and one site mentioned this book - Feeling Good : The New Mood Therapy by David D. Burns. I plan on getting a copy from the local library but I am open to suggestions on what else is available. By the way, I've been reading some of your posts, you seem very knowledgeable about depression and anxiety. I'm sure your suggestions and comments have helped a great deal of people. FYI: I'm also in IT. Eldon

Hi Eldon, yes I am currently undergoing CBT. I guess Im about 2/3 of the way through it. In conjunction with an SSRI anti-depressant and lifestyle changes, its really working very well for me. There are generally two modes of CBT. 1) Attending a therapist/psychologist 2) self mastery training, which is like the course on this site, or there are some great books out there. These are usually 9-12 week programs where you practice exercises every day. The most effective treatment is normally SSRIs in conjunction with CBT, which should involve both and attendance component with a therpist and extensive personal work (self mastery). Its a good idea to do both, as firstly it cuts down the costs of seeing a therpaist - you might need 6 sessions instead of 20. Secondly, you learn to be reliant on yourself and to help yourself get better - this can be a very rewarding experience and give you the confidence you need. The last thing you want is to become dependent on your therapist. Exposure therpay is a bit scary at first. I was very aprehensive about inducing hyperventilation, but now i have done it a couple of times and feel control and confidence about it, and can see how it is interelated with panic attacks, but also how it alone is separate to a PA. I strongly recommend this form of treatment for Panic Disorder. It does however involve a strong degree of self motivation and self involvement to be truly effective.

Welcome Eldon, Our Panic Program is Congnitive Behaviour Therapy. Studies have shown that it does work. I am hoping that others within this support group can share their stories with you. Have you tried our Anxiety Test? After you take the test you can print your results or e-mail them to your doctor. Again, welcome and if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to post with again :). Take care, Melanie This message was edited by Melanie, Support Specialist on 5/11/2004 @ 6:11:40 PM

I'm not really sure what my diagnosis is yet but I'm working on it. I have some anxiety and stress problems and currently have a real problem getting a good night sleep. Meds don't seem to be helping all that much right now so I am exploring other alternatives. I have just started seeing a psychologist who specializes in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Has anyone out there used this before and what are your success stories like? I would be interested to know that and how long it took (how many sessions) to start seeing results. Eldon
