mlk, I have teenagers, too and they have friends who smoke. I don't know what makes them start. As you said, smoking is not presented as it was when we were young. I think now, rather than a "fitting in" sort of rite of passage, it's more a rebellion. More like pot was when we were teenagers. Also, the fact that teenagers, especially boys, think they are 7 feet tall & bulletproof & nothing can hurt them plays a part. Aside from telling my kids that if they ever smoke, I will break all their fingers, I talk to them about smoking & never defend my own addiction. When they complain that we could do a lot more fun things if I didn't spend money on the evil weed, I acknowledge that they are right, apologize & ask them to be patient a little longer until I am ready to try quitting again. When my previous attepts have failed, I don't hide it from them. I tell them I've been smoking again and ask for their support & patience because I have learned something for next time even if that time was not successful. When they ask why I smoke, I tell them it's because I'm addicted, I allowed that to happen & it is very difficult to beat. I tell them I would give a lot to go back & never start. You get the picture. I hope that my children are smart enough, secure enough & love themselves enough to never start but if they do, I will break all their fingers as promised.

Thank you Mercy, I find this topic very interesting. When I started smoking 32 years ago, it was something you did to be cool, fit in with everyone. Yes, I do remember coughing and having to work myself into "liking" it, but it was very much socially acceptable, so many people were doing it. Now in this day and age, smoking is becoming more and more socially unacceptable. You cannot smoke in public places, there is hardly any advertising (at least not like it was 30 years ago), and we know much more about the risks involved and the addiction. So, why do our young people start smoking these days? There is little advertising, they are taught it is a drug starting in elementary school and it is banned in public places which makes it pretty much socially unacceptable. It concerns me because I have a teenage son and I have read that I would be fooling myself if I thought he wouldn't smoke just because he hated that I smoked. He is at risk, what more can I do? What can I do to make sure he is never brainwashed into smoking? I read what Mercy wrote...and thought it was pretty cool...so I ran it by a friend of mine...who has a Masters degree in Behavioral psychology...this was her response: (by the way..she doesn't smoke) Actually, the behavioral science isn't entirely accurately explained and ignores several other factors. For example, for many people, smoking is INITIALLY extremely unpleasant. They cough, gag, etc. There are social factors, NOT physical ones, that encourage them to continue smoking until the smoking, per se, becomes itself something pleasant for them. Ironically, it actually takes some effort for somebody to initially cross the barrier to begin using cigarettes (or alcohol, or many other things). Blame things like advertising and social pressures for pushing somebody in that direction. Nicotine isn't the bad guy until later in the play.
