New Papa and slivers - You are so early in your quit - My advice is to use the gum as often as you need it (as long as you aren't going beyond recommended dosage). I used the patches and I really needed them at the beginning. I wasn't a morning smoker so I would put them on about 1 hour before cravings usually started....sometimes I put them on earlier. As a patch user, I didn't have to take responsibility for reducing the amount of nicotine I put into my system (the patches did that). However, the more I got used to not smoking, the easier it was to drop down. I'd be lying if I said that I never think about having a cigarette but I really don't crave nicotine anymore. I think that part often happens naturally. Good luck! Lets get this straight. Nothing will make uou quit you need to want to! NRT does not contain the thousands of chemicals that cigarettes do. NRT helps you by controlling the desire for Nicotine letting you focus in the habit. NRT is I believe addictive which is why you cut it down gradually.I went 15mg patches 10mg patches 5 mg patches 2mg gum and then on Dec 26th nothing! Still get the odd twitch but nothing really..... NEVER HAD A PUFF SINCE I QUIT AFTER 50 YEARS SMOKING!!! So it worked for me and I am now off it Phil My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 153 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,216 Amount Saved: 803.25 Life Gained: Days: 30 Hrs: 15 Mins: 8 Seconds: 52

Hi newpapa...I think your name indicates why you are quitting nicotine addiciton???? Chewing the gum is most certainly better than inhaling poisonous gases into your lungs. But, be aware of how many pieces you are chewing each day. When the step down date comes, make sure that you go down to that many pieces. By the end, you are only supposed to be chewing 2 pieces a day. Don't just pop one in your mouth whenever you feel like it. But, you are correct, you can get addicted to the gum. I knew a girl who chewed it for 5 years! I met a man who spent more on nictine gum than he did on cigs! So, stay controlled about it and use it as an aid. You are doing great. just use your NRT like directed....sometimes the "time period" is extended on the use of the gum or the patches....that won't hurt....but keep up the "weaning process".....personally I used the patches for about 3 months....I used each step 4 weeks. don't be afraid...don't look too far down the road....just take what is happening at the present and you will be fine Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1828 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 73,133 Amount Saved: $10419.6 Life Gained: Days: 241 Hrs: 2 Mins: 55 Seconds: 8

Holygee, Welcome to the SSC. Thank you for taking the time to post your question. The patch is a common nicotine replacement therapy used by many individuals. While there are many different types of nicotine replacement patches available, here is how the basis of the patch works: The patch is designed to temporarily replace some of the nicotine that cigarettes would normally supply into your bloodstream. When applying the patch it is controlled by releasing quantities of nicotine from the patch into your skin. Then from your skin the nicotine is released into your bloodstream. Because some nicotine is left in your skin when you take the patch off, the nicotine will continue to pass into your bloodstream for several hours after patch removal. Applying the patch: Choose an area of skin on your upper body or the upper outer part of your arm. The patch should be worn for approximately 24 hours and then removed and discarded. Do not leave it on for more than 24 hours because it may irritate your skin, and because it loses strength after that time. You should always replace your patch at the same time each day. This will help you to remember to change it. Please remember to read the instructions that comes within the package you have purchased. If you are still having problems with understanding to patch then please seek assistance from your doctor or your pharmacist. Hope this gives you more of an idea of how the patch works :). We look forward to hearing from you again soon. Melanie _________________________ The SSC Support Team

NewPapa, Welcome to the SSC :). There's no doubt about it, quitting doesn't happen at once. Research scientists have found that most people try to quit seven times before they succeed, and unsuccessful quit attempts, while frustrating, are actually part of the process of quitting. But not everyone tries quitting seven times. People who seriously prepare beforehand can successfully quit smoking - even on their first try. Your chances of quitting for good can increase if you view quitting as a journey, or a healing process that your body goes through. We suggest that you see quitting in this light rather than seeing it as an abrupt and uncomfortable change in your personal lifestyle. Our interactive and personalized on line program is designed to help you quit and the exercises in this program are divided into six major milestones. Think of each milestone as a destination you're trying to reach. After you complete the exercises in each milestone your car will move along the road map located at the left-hand side of your screen. Please take advantage of our online quit program! Although the program will first assess if you're ready to quit, the exercises at the beginning of the program will help remind you of the reasons why you quit in the first place. Don't get frustrated - ex-smokers have told us that the exercises at the beginning of the program gave them confidence and helped them reaffirm their personal commitment to remain smoke free. Again, welcome. We look forward to helping you achieve your goal to on remaining smoke-free :). Cheers, Melanie ____________________________ The SSC Support Team
