fight or accept this?

Jaide I know how confusing this disorder can be. Do we fight, or do we accept? I would recommend reading Hope and Help for Your Nerves,by Claire Weeks. This book it very helpful in differentiating between fighting and accepting. She explains in great detail how to deal with panic attacks. She also has another book called Peace from Nervous Suffering. These books have been a tremendous help. When I am going through periods of anxiety, I sometimes read a passage in the morning before I leave for work and it really helps. Although these books were written years ago, this woman really knew what she was talking about. She was so ahead of her time. Practicing her methods will help you get over the bumps in the road. Good luck to you.

dCheryl, yes,i am trying to find answers and i feel the only way to learn is to ask, especially asking people who have walked in my shoes. I'm sorry you had such a horrible day yesterday....but i am glad you're feeling some better today.......hopefully tomorrow will be a good one too.I hope it will be for me too. You wake up feeling anxious too? That sux so bad to open your eyes to a brand new day,the sun is shining, alot of possibilities for the day,you think it's gonna be a "different" day, this JUST may be one of the good days and then bam!! your heart starts beating fast,etc.etc. etc. and then it kinda sets a tone for the entire day.How does a person re-direct that? With positive thinking?Breathing exercises?

I wouldn't say that you're fighting it when you do those things...I would say you are taking control of the situation. I'm like you jaide. I'm trying to find answers. Yesterday was a horrible, horrible day for me and today I feel 10 times better....almost normal. Now who knows whats going to happen tomorrow? I can only hope that if I start feeling anxious when I wake up, I can re-direct myself.

shannon68,i already do those things you mentioned when i'm having a panic attack. I think "ok,my heart is beating a little fast, that's because i'm anxious",i feel like i'm not breathing, but actually i am",etc.Sometimes i can prevent an attack altogether just by doing that. But,isn't that "fighting" it?Is it better to fight the symptoms and get them to quit,or just surrender to it and let what happens happen? When i fight the attacks,it sure drains me and i end up feeling so exhausted, more so than if i just let myself totally panic.

In all my reading and sessions with my Dr. they say you must accept it, and learn how to overcome it. The more you try to fight a panic attack the worse it will get. The day I threw my hands up and said I can't fight this anymore, was the day I felt much better. You will have to retrain the way you think. It will take time but you can do it, I have and there was a time when I never thought I could. Continue to educate yourself. When you have an attack, what I do is first, Breathe!! Then I ask my panic to leave, I let it know that I don't need it right now and I go over all the symptoms I 'm having and explain why. Example : My chest hurts because I'm tense, I need to relax. I feel dizzy because I'm breathing to fast... This really helps because it puts me back in control of my thoughts. Give it a try!! Shannon

I seem to be full of questions today... :p I'm just curious, are we supposed to just "accept" that we have a panic disorder,or are we supposed to "fight"it? What i mean is,if i tell myself "ok,i suffer from panic attacks and it's just something i have to deal with and learn to manage",is that gonna help me more in the longrun more than if i tell myself "ok,i suffer from panic attacks,i am gonna fight these symptoms every inch of the way,i am not gonna have this disorder,i can beat this, etc." And what about during a panic attack,is it better to just "let" all the physical symptoms happen or to fight them and prevent them from happening?
