Mental cravings long post but any input / experiences appreciated

Im well into my second smoke free day using the patch, I smoked around 15 a day.. So far I am doing ALOT better than I thought I would but there is a part of me that misses smoking.. For example, today we got hit with about 10cm of snow and I love the snow and I was thinking in my head, wow I would just love to sit on my front step with a hot cup of coffee and have a few cigarettes and just watch the snow falling.. But instead I shoveled the driveway 3 times..lol..Now after that I think wow, I would really like a smoke to reward myself for all that hard work but nope instead I engaged in a snowball fight with my kids.. I have no problem finding things to do to re-direct my mind away from smoking but will I have to do this forever? I don't want to live the rest of my life thinking about smoking but if I have to I will b/c smoking again is not an option for me at all.. I have a few friends that have quit.. My one friend going on 4 years told me that she was totally disgusted by smoking a few weeks into her quitting time and can't believe she actually did it for so long and ect.. But I have 2 other friends that quit (they are both going on around 6 months smoke-free) and they both say that they still get mental urges to smoke.. I am scared that is gonna be me.. I mean wanting to smoke is a helluva lot better than actually doing it.. What are your experience or input on this situation.. Also, in your experience did it get easier as the days go by or did it go day to day and have ups and downs? Like I stated above, I have been doing alot better then I thought I would but tommorow night I am facing the hardest test.. I am working a 5-9 shift and to boot i am working by myself.. Im scared to work b/c my job is quite high stress, Im pondering calling in sick because I dont want to do anything to risk this.. Platinum, First off, your really off to a great start with your quit. Your distractions are perfect. Keep up the great work. I felt the same way as you do in the beginning of the quit. How am I going to live my life always thinking about cigs. But my reasons for quitting and wanting to be smoke free kept moving me forward, day by day....until....you don't think about them every day in a way that is longing or missing. You get to the point where you are so proud of yourself for coming so far (this can happen even in week 2) that you don't want to blow it, so you keep moving forward...and before you know it, you find a happy place with your quit. Your happy your smoke free. Do you still miss them and wish you could smoke....maybe...maybe not. It just depends, but what's important is to remember that smoking kills. Your missing a killer not a long lost friend...so go ahead and grieve the killer, then keep distracting. And by the way...I LOVE my front porch and was my hangout every day where I would drink coffee, and smoke and watch the deer cross and the snow fall and the storms roll in. When your ready...go out there with your coffee...sit and watch the snow fall...and actually smell the snow and the winter crispness....you can sit out there and relax...without the cig. I Love it!!!!! Butterfly - You are replacing your smoking memories with non-smoking memories. There was a post about this and if you can find it, I would really recommend that you read it. We all used cigarettes when we wanted to relax, to reward ourselves, when were stressed. Every time we have that feeling, we associate it with smoking. Now we are non-smokers. Today, you rewarded yourself with a snowball fight with your kids. Eventually, you will start to have more and more non-smoking memories. On Sunday, I was really sad. I started to think about how I could hardly wait to go to the gym. In the past, I would think about a cigarette but now something else makes me feel better. The memories don't go away all at once.......but as time goes on their strength will diminish and you will have a whole new set of memories! All the best! Mate I am over 5 months into my quit and I smoked for 50 years. At first I could think of nothing else. Then it fades a little VERY gradually. On December 26th I didnt even think about smoking. That was MY Tuesday!! Few craves since but nothing major! The key is try and keep bust and forget about the S word as much as you can! PB, focus on today. Tomorrow will take care of itself. Today you will grow in strength as you continue to not give control over to your addiction. Today's strength will help you tomorrow and in the future. Are you working the workbook? It will help you understand what you are feeling and how you can cope. Of course it gets easier...no one would stay quit if it didn't. You will have ups and downs, but deal with them one at a time, one hour at a time, one day at a time. Platinum, It will get easier and being occupied will help. You are using the right tools to keep you going and finding things that will occupy you. Your life will change for the better and you will see all the great advantages of quitting. Try taking a few things to work with you to cope with those craves. Gum, candy, chew stick, crosswords or even a book :) You will come through wonderfully :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
