discuss our symptoms

I've been having attacks for about 4 or 5 months now. They usually hit me at night, sometimes waking me up with a terrible feeling of unreality. I'm awakened by what literally feels like someone ripping my soul from my body. Then I walk around, drink somewater and after awhile I can fall asleep. Other symptoms include: rapid heart beat/skipping beats; difficulty breathing; chest pain; insomnia; feelings of unreality; pains in my head; dizziness; anger. I'm supposed to sign on an apartment tomorrow, but I'm thinking of backing out - I'm nervous about living alone....afraid that I might die in my sleep or something.

Dizziness Sweating Hyperactivity Unable to sleep I have only had two full panic attacks but am plagued with anxiety often. Most of the time it is at a very low level and I can go on with life by remaining occupied and doing relaxation therapy. Mike

Mine fall into alot of categories, most bothersome is the smothering feeling with extremely rapid heartbeat, not to mention I have a heart mumur (but not life threatening-but try telling myself that during a full blown attack doesnt help), dizziness, jelly legs, shaking all over, can barely speak. Years back I had one of the most horrible attacks, that I literally lost control of my bowels, well...needless to say I had always heard, when you die, this happens, I was quite sure, that was the one that truly going to kill me. I even would think like in the movie "What about Bob?", will someone just knock me out, so if I do go..at least I wont know it. But I might add, I did find a doctor, got out of those negative thoughts, was agoraphobic, and even succeed to overcome that. I let my own self relapse after having about 2 years of no panic attacks, I didnt stay up on my coping skills, etc. that I should have kept doing, but Im making steps on making it back. I know it can be done, because I have been there. Trish

By the way... to the best of my knowledge dp/dr feeds on fear. So if youre scared of being depersonalized you will get more depersonalized.. in my opinion. My dp/dr peaked 2 months after my first panic, probably because i dwelled on it so much. What I did was first find out what dp/dr was and after I found out that I was not the only one to get it and that it indeed can be started by panic disorder I began to use it as a new perspective on life. That never made me enjoy the dp/dr however.. I just wanted to write this to let you all know that there is a link between dp/dr and anxiety/panic. regards, Ben

Feelings of unreality or spacyness not occuring during a time of panic are depersonalization/derealization symptoms. I was just looking over this site now.. as I came here months earlier when I was in my lowest point of panic... and I saw this post. I wanted to let you know that i had feelings of depersonalization for a couple months after my anxiety was more under control... also confusion. ohh yea. Remember it seems to me that you can still have problems with anxiety even after you feel that its more under control. The mind races soo much when you have panic disorder. In my case it seemed like I got a slight case of attention defecit disorder. It has been about 5 months since my first panic attack.. Between that first attack and the next two months after that was like hell to me. Nothing but panic and when I wasnt panicing i had super anxiety with depersonalization. I thought there was something really wrong with me.. Turns out I just had to relax. Panic/latent anxiety can do a lot to your thinking. THe mind is a very powerful thing. My depersonalization I still have to a small extent as well as some anxiety, but its getting less and less as time goes on. Good luck...
