Rusty I maintain a shared belief in this area. I truly do believe that when one refuses to resist evil but instead transend it by creating good, all is well with the world...I am really with you when you say that this experience (stopping smoking) is great practice for choosing positive outcomes in other areas of our lives. nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 83 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,002 Amount Saved: $581 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 12 Mins: 3 Seconds: 55

Thinking Makes It So It is my experience that when I become depressed, or sad or lonely, or in need of a cigarette, I immediately search my little brain to see what thought I was atatched to at that moment. You see my mind, shall we say, does not always "stay on message"...Given the opportunity (about 85% of the time) my consciousness will go traveling...and as it travels it stumbles across various and sundry bits and pieces of the past present and future that reside in the realm of my experience and dreams... I can usually trace the way that I am feeling (sad, happy, depressed, elated etc,) to the last thought to which I was atatched. And it is for this reason that we as addicts must, must ,must imagine the end of our journey NOW. In order to attain the reality of the non-smoking self, we must SEE ourselves as a non-smoker...And I mean this in the most concrete way...We must create, visualize and memorize the picture of ourselves never ever smoking a butt...Once we clearly find that image and practice the realization of the vision, we do indeed become that entity...And we do it not by "resisting evil", but by "creating good"..."Resisting evil" is when we think that our journey is a trek of denial (denying the pleasure of smoking)..."Creating good" is when we see the end of the journey NOW...That deeply felt, familar and real image of you as a non-smoker...Thats the way it works for me, perhaps others have an equally powerful vision...I hope so because this is a very potent addiction and it cannot be banished through resistance alone...So keep your image very near and when next your mind goes wandering off message, it will stumble across that image and you will be that much closer to attaing your goal... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 83 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,001 Amount Saved: $581 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 11 Mins: 54 Seconds: 54

nonic, I think what you say is true. Oftentimes you can "hear" in people's struggles that they are in the mindframe of need, lack, missing, resentment, suffering. When we change that to a new vision and a new life ahead, that's when we turn the corner to success. I believe this is true also further along in the quit and into the rest of our lives. People say they have lost the excitement or the motivation of the quit and they go back to smoking or other self-destructive behaviors. But if we learn to always monitor our thoughts toward good and positive outcomes in every facet of our lives, we will probably not accept negative thoughts and behavior as a part of how we see ourselves. Good job as always, nonic!
