Under 20 years old?

Hi there. It's nice to know you're not alone. I too had PD diagnosed at fourteen. I had symptoms as far back as ten, but back in the seventies, PD wasn't really known. I was diagnosed in the early eighties and unfortunetly, it's taken these twenty years to find the right meds. All I can say is don't lose sight of what you want- you may feel that NOTHING will happen and you can't achieve your dreams. Trust me, you can. At the lowest point of your life, you will find what you need to come out from below and rise above it and feel on top of the world. Good luck!!! ps- I don't go to movie's either- haven't since I was really young. I prefer renting videos anyhow =)

I'm 17 too. I've had them ever since I was 12 and a half. They happen a lot at school. I have a hard time even driving to school. Senior year, I think, puts a ton more stress on you to make you panic even more.

Crimson, I"m 44, but have been having panic attacks since I was about 12. I missed a lot of school in 6th grade, but had tutors come to my house so at least I got credit for school. I even dropped out of high school because of it, but finally got my Diploma (LONG story) I also have a niece who is 13 that has had PAs for the last 3-4 years. She takes Zoloft and does pretty well. HTH!!

hey krissy ... i'm new to these boards but i saw your post. i no longer fall into your age group but i started having panic attacks (that i can remember specifically) when i was 12yrs old. i am now 20 yrs old and have been trying to learn to cope with it/overcome it. although i may no longer be in the "teen" category. i spent all of my teen years even prior to my teen years living with and discovering that i had panic disorder. those years were very tough for me, and just when i thought that i personally had gotten it all under control (my senior year of HS) . . . i went off to college and it all came tumbling back down . . . since then i left my university and moved back home due to certain circumstances. i now am trying to get my life back in gear and do what it is i really want to do, instead of living with this constant battle of whether i will prevail or whether the panic disorder will prevail. if you ever wanna talk about anything you are going through (and i did go through a lot back in HS) then feel free to email me @ shannon@j0o.com or if you have aim: Shann0nKelly or yahoo: otwiggyo hope everything stays good for you :)

hey Crimson, I'm not under 20 years old either (26 to be exact) but I can relate to what you're talking about. I had my first panic attack when I was 16 and it scared the living **** outta me. I had my girlfriend at the time take me to the emerg. and the doctors came back with a big shrug and a "we dunno" diagnosis. So, I went on, sometimes I would have panic attacks, I'd get through them, sometimes I would go to emerg and they'd say the same thing. Then they subsided, I still had a elevated level of anxiety but the PAs somewhat "went away". Eventually they came back though. Just this year I've been in emerg a total of 9 times with PAs, this is when I finally got fed up and decided to figure it out. So, long story short, I went 10 years without knowing what was going on. I'm certainly glad to know now. Anyway, I'm rambling :| So, just wanted to post up that most people have their first attack around 15 - 19 but most don't know what it is. If I had the internet then (or if it existed then ;) I would have probably figured it out a lot sooner. Also, I haven't been in a movie theatre for about 4 years myself. But, not due to PAs, just because I don't really care for them. Weird though that none of us go to movie theatres.

Personally, I haven't been in a movie theatre in like 3 years (maybe more!), so not yet. On a similar note, I do tend to have panic attcks when watching shows that have high suspence levels, or where situations are mimicing something I am going through KRISSY I am over 17 (33 to be exact) but I have same problem with watching tv sometimes. I can't watch anything that deals with mental illness at all

Hey Italiana! Thanks so much for responding to my post. As you asked, here are my answers: 1)How long have you had the attacks? I have been having attacks since I was 15. However it was not until I was 16 that I knew what they were, and not until April 2003 that I began having panic attcaks frequently. 2)Do they ever occur in class and make you leave? My very first panic attck occured after a very difficult math test. It was super scary because I had no idea what was happening to me. School is the place where I most often get my panic attacks to the point where I have had to explain this disorder to most of my teachers, and my drama coach. A list of classes where I have had to leave so far: Math, french, english, chemistry, philosophy, (and I am sure there are others). 3)Do you ever get them in movie theaters? Personally, I haven't been in a movie theatre in like 3 years (maybe more!), so not yet. On a similar note, I do tend to have panic attcks when watching shows that have high suspence levels, or where situations are mimicing something I am going through. Hope those answers help, and if you want to email me just leave a note asking for my address and I will give it to you so we can talk. Krissy

Hey Krissy, I am 17 too. They started a couple months before I turned 15. I haven't told any of my friends / family but it is so great to see so many other people my age that can relate. I don't feel as different now. (you don't have to answer these, I'm just curious if they pertain to other 17 year olds - if you don't mind) How long have you had the attacks? Do they ever occur in class and make you leave? Do you ever get them in movie theaters? Thank you so much for posting!
