It's ok to give in .... But as soon as you realize it's not right to smoke again, then stop it, and throw away the rest of the cigarette packet. And resume your resolution to quit, once for all, quit for life ! :) In my 35 years of smoking, this is my fifth "major" attempt to quit. In between, there were several other "minor" attempts -- ranging from few hours to few days ... I always know that smoking is bad, really bad for me ... But it is very addictive, and hard to fight against it! Every failed attempt is a lesson to learn, and we should try again, and again ... As I said many times in this forum, I'm determined to succeed this time ! I don't think you've set yourself too far back, if you're ready to jump right back on the bandwagon. Are you using any NRT's. I'm using the patch. First of all, don't beat yourself up, it's not going to do you any good at all. Second, relax, deep breath and now take a good close look at what happened. I have definitely been where are in previous quits, so you are not alone. Now its up to you to make the choice. I think you can do this. You're here, looking for support by posting. Keep strong, and keep posting. I can't imagine how awful you must feel, but I am certain that the best thing to do is be strong and positive to understand what triggered you to smoke so that you are more prepared for this never to happen again. I think the importance is not on how far you've set yourself back with THIS 1/2 cigarette, but what damage it COULD do to your quit and your resolve to continue if you let it. Sometimes, people think "well, that wasn't so bad... I smoked, but I don't have any increased withdrawals, so it'll be OK to smoke this time" and that's a VERY dangerous thing to let happen! The important thing is hands down, undeniably, without a doubt - that you don't do it again!!!! With my first "slip" I smoked 1 cigarette. My second slip, I smoked 2 puffs of a cigarette. My 3rd slip (when I reset my meter, never to slip again and that's where it's at today), I smoked 7 cigarettes and I was practically climbing the walls trying to justify smoking for just a little longer and it almost destroyed my quit! If it weren't for the good people here on this site, I would most definitely still be smoking! So whatever you do, DO NOT LET YOURSELF FALL INTO THAT TRAP!!!!!! Let this be a lesson... learn from it. You know what they say, "those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it." Your choice. Crave the Quit! Errodr, every quit is different, your quit is your own, you and only you can know how this is going to affect you physically and mentally. So my advise, get back on the wagon ASAP and forgive yourself.
