fear of swallowing

Hi Fiestyfem here...I just have to put in my 2 cents worth here...it just hits so close to home. I'm happy to say for the most part "Been there and done that" with the swallowing problem. My story: I had gotten hired off the street into a Clerk III position, in a head office of a crown corporation. Anyway I didn't get enough training then the lady I was replacing was gone, next thing I knew the second lady was going on vacation and I was covering for her as well. On top of all this I had a management person that was very emotionally abusive to deal with. That's when my problem swallowing started. It very quickly got to the point where I was so afraid of choking I wouldn't swallow my own saliva. I remember trying to talk on the phone with a mouth full of saliva, it was crazy. Other people (that I was talking to on the phone) thought I was drunk or something. A good friend took me aside at home and said if you don't start drinking something I'm going to take you to emerg and they will put a balloon in your throat and blow it up to make sure nothing is physically wrong with you. Well, that scared me more then the thought of swallowing so I began drinking mutritional shakes. In the meantime I was dropping weight like crazy and getting that gaunt look, not attractive. Gradually I progressed to more solid foods. At first my friend would take me out to dinner, I'd order and only be able to eat 2 mouthfuls. Today I eat normally for the most part, at times I have trouble drinking liquids, but I noticed this is mostly when I'm extremely stressed and yes I believe there is a connection. One lasting phase of this whole thing is I can't sleep on my back anymore...because just as I'm drifting off my brain can't decide whether to swallow or breath and I jerk awake gasping for air. Anyone have that problem???

The treatment of choice is to find a good behavioral or cognitive behavioral therapist who can help you deal with this problem. Basically you want help to identify and challenge your anxious thoughts and how your anxious thoughts contribute to your fear. More importantly though, you want to unlearn your fear by gradually approaching the foods that are difficult for you to eat. In behavioral treatment to overcome this kind of learned fear, you would be asked to make a list of foods that you currently can eat and what you cannot, then your therapist would help you to gradually approach the foods and situations that you fear. Typically people start by eating things like thin milkshakes and clear soups, work their way up through pureed fruit and soups, babyfood and very wet (soggy) cereal, and then gradually expose themselves to slightly less "liquid" and more chewy food, and finally things like toast, french fries, peanut butter and "dry" cereal. If there is no behavior or cognitive behavioral treatment available where you live, you could use the Panic Program to help you with this. Basically you want to expose yourself to eating for 1/2 hour or an hour per day, the way somebody else might have to expose themselves to driving or riding in elevators. It is a tough go, for sure, but it works. The secrets are to start out with foods that are doable right now (even if it isn't easy), and make sure your physician knows what is going on for you.

First of all, I love my comfort zone. I realize exactly where the borders are - and, begin to feel the sensation, that we all know and fear, of panic when I go out of bounds. At this point, let me say this. I know what it is like to be in the free fall of panic and cannot seem to swallow. That makes you panic more - the fact you can't seem to get a handle on swallowing, or even breathing, for that matter. Why? I finally asked myself. Well, my answer was, "...it is an unconscious act of 'total blocking' because of the delirium of 'fear' - that is it...€ So, knowing, that if I passed out, from not breathing or blocked my breath because of not swallowing - I would wake up when it was all over. What to do while it is happening? Distraction - distraction - distraction. Whatever it takes - run outside - drink chocolate milk - stand in the shower fully clothed - experiment -you will find the answer. And, remember, you are not alone, it is not an uncommon symptom - you will be fine! It just takes allot of hard work to get a handle on this creature called panic/anxiety. Bye for now, post often...

Kevin, my safety zone is also very, very small and i feel the best at home but i try to go out with my mother or boyfreind every day to some "distant" place in my town. sometimes panic is really awful but it does go away. i had trouble swallowing a couple years back. i couldn't swallow food or did this with extreme panic. i think i have overcome this by chewing biscuits. maybe this will help? hello, I will try to make this short. I need some advise from someone who might have this problem. my main fear is choking when I swallow anything, including my own saliva. when I travel outside my comfort zone (about 2 min from my house) I feel as if im going to choke when I swallow, and when I do swallow I get so scared that I litteraly tense up and get cold chills. now I know taking small steps is the key, but even if I go litteraly 1 block out of my zone, I start to get scare and have problesm swallowing, and when I turn around to go home, even though im in my comfort zone, everything seems to be foreign...I feel as if im on the other side of the world, and immediatly my comfort zone becomes my door to my house. SO as you can see taking even small steps is a huge leap for me...any advise? thank you so much for listening Kevin
