Fear Of Swallowing

What you are describing is , unfortunately not uncommon for people who have been through what you have been through. Given the weight loss and suffering you are describing I hope you under the care of a physician who is watching your health carefully. The treatment of choice is to find a good behavioral or cognitive behavioral therapist who can help you deal with this problem. Basically you want help to identify and challenge your anxious thoughts and how your anxious thoughts contribute to your fear. More importantly though, you want to unlearn your fear by gradually approaching the foods that are difficult for you to eat. In behavioral treatment to overcome this kind of learned fear, you would be asked to make a list of foods that you currently can eat and what you cannot, then your therapist would help you to gradually approach the foods and situations that you fear. Typically people start by eating things like thin milkshakes and clear soups, work their way up through pureed fruit and soups, babyfood and very wet (soggy) cereal, and then gradually expose themselves to slightly less "liquid" and more chewy food, and finally things like toast, french fries, peanut butter and "dry" cereal. If there is no behavior or cognitive behavioral treatment available where you live, you could use the Panic Program to help you with this. Basically you want to expose yourself to eating for 1/2 hour or an hour per day, the way somebody else might have to expose themselves to driving or riding in elevators. It is a tough go, for sure, but it works. The secrets are to start out with foods that are doable right now (even if it isn't easy), and make sure your physician knows what is going on for you. -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator

I have had a fear of swallowing for the past 3 months. After a year of difficulties due to esophagus erosions, I have acquired a habit of hesistating whenever food is about to be swallowed. Now that my esophagus is back to normal, the habits still exist, and cause me to panic. Instead of the normal swallowing routine, chew and swallow, mine is more of chew, stop, slowly gather myself, mentally prepare to attempt to swallow, hoping and praying that i dont choke, then swallow, only to hesistate, panic, calm myself down, either fight down or cough up the food, and throw away the rest of my dinner. This is really holding me back. I cannot work or even leave the house because of it. I have undergone hypnosis and am currently taking Risperdal but nothing seems to get me back to normal. I can drink and swallow my saliva (because of the medication) but the food is still as hard to swallow as ever. i have to chew it into liquid just to have any kind of chance of getting it down. That still doesnt work too well. Everytime there is food around me, and I think to myself im going to eat it, my heart starts racing and I tremble. I have lost 30 lbs in the past 8 weeks and I am feel extremely dizzy and tired. No energy nor hope. It seems like it will never get better. I need suggestions. What is the best medication to take, what kind of doctor is the best to talk to, what type of therapy is most effective, etc. PLEASE, I am so hungry!!!
