Are these panic attacks?

Panic Man, I have had panic attacks lasting from 10 minutes up to 10 hours, so yes, from what you are describing, it's certainly possible you are having a panic attack. I too have had blood tests and many other tests including MRI, CAT scan, EKG twice, etc. They can never find anything actually wrong with me other than high blood pressure (which is temporary during the attacks). I keep a lot inside too, but it's certainly not healthy. If you don't have a good friend who you can confide everything in, think about trying a therapist. This doesn't mean that you should stop going to your regular doctor. I hope things improve for you shortly. Keep us posted. Palindrome

Hi There, Yes, panic attacks can have serious physical symptoms. They can be very traumatic, and their effects can last for a while afterwards. I'm not sure any of us totally recover from one, its very hard to forget the feeling of it, and its very hard not to always be afraid to have another one. However, i'm not a doctor, and can't tell you what is happening to you. You're the only one who can decide what makes sense. Do your physical symptoms come in attacks, then their intensity gradually reduces? How do you feel in between these attacks? If you are having panic attacks, then you probably feel physically fine between them (although probably pretty shaken, and will still have some nervous sypmtoms). Take marianne's advice, and get help. Get a second opinion if you feel you need one, read up about it, and get support from your loved ones. Don't deal with this on your own. Please keep us posted, and hang in there! Beth

Hi Panic Man, This sounds awful! You must be really scared! To answer your question, yes, what you describe sounds very much like a panic attack! Mine usually have some physical component, and when they first started I was convinced I was having a heart attack. I remember one night many years ago when I called the emergency services because my breathing was really jumpy, I was feeling faint and my pulse was way too slow. I was sure I had some cardiac disorder. They just told me to stop wasting their time, and I felt more helpless than before. I felt I was going to die, I had called for help but nobody was listening to me. At other times I had chest pains or restricted breathing, all kinds of things really, and the symptoms kept changing, so you couldn't get used to them. The thing is, these symptoms are real, there's no point pretending they are not there, but THEY ARE NOT DANGEROUS. You may not believe me because they feel so life threatening, but I've been there, many times in the past 20 years, and I'm still alive! Your body sometimes does go twitch and sting and tense and outch, it just does, and it can last for days, but you are going to survive. My advice to you is: Please please go and get some help NOW, see a therapist, read up on panic attacks, tell you friends and family about it. Finding this site is a great beginning! Just don't let it go chronic, the longer you leave it the harder it will be to get it under control! And don't be afraid, you will survive! Honest! Marianne

Hi! I am new here and I have been getting what I think are panic attacks for a couple of months. My doctor gave me blood tests and ran some tests on my heart and said that I am healthy but I am not so sure. After a panic attack I feel strange for days after. My head gets a weird feeling in the back of it and my face tightens up also I feel like I am in a trance like state. The first panic attack I had felt like I was having a heart attack. My heart was beating so fast that I went and laid on the sidewalk for a minute because the feeling was so intense. It eventually went away but I was extremely scared after that. I thought for sure I was dying. The last one I had was so intense. I thought this one was a stroke. My face started tightened up so much that it was burning. I ran out of the house in my socks yelling "Help Me I need to go to the hospital now" I ran for a little while and then I laid flat down on the sidewalk. This scared my girlfriend so much that she started to cry because she didn't know what to do. I came back into the house and laid on the floor and was very nauseous and feeling like I was going to throw up. More than an hour later it passed, but I was exhausted over the experience. It happened a couple of days ago and I still feel the effects. Once during an attack the side of my mouth was twitching uncontrollably and it lasted for days. I would go and look in the mirror each day to see if it stopped and finally it did. This happened about 2 months ago and I haven't had the twitching since. The panic attacks recently seem to start with a weird sensation in my head and a tightness in my face. I have always had anxiety around other people. Everytime I go out I become anxious. I am also a very nervous person and I worry alot plus I keep alot inside. My doctor has put me on Zoloft. He seems to think that it is just panic attacks.Does this sound like a panic attack or could it be something more serious?
