Fear Of The Real World - New Job!

Mr Bubble, This is the technique I used in learning to walk again. I always try to visualize forward..not backwards. I don't know where that came from..not from me, I know that. What else do you do to help yourself? Any other techniques that would help us or others? Red

Hi Guys Sorry guys, I have been really busy at work for the past few days. I agree with Red, although I cope in a slightly different way. Rather than imagining yourself as some body else, try imagining a "new , improved" you. There seems to be a lot about you to like, so why not keep most of it. The way I have tried to talk myself into trying new things is to try to imagine what my life would be like if I was just a little less anxious (not a lot, just a bit less) and a little less agoraphobic. What would I be doing differently? When I figure out what I would be doing if I was just a little less anxious, then I try to do it. The other thing that works for me is to focus on how far I have come and on my steps "forward" rather than my steps "backword". You are fighting hard against a terrible condition. Look how far you have come and give yourself some credit. I think being able to feel good about how far I have come gives me some positive energy to keep moving ahead.

I am doing real well, Maria, but I wanted to discuss with you, what may be good for your first few days of work. If I were to start a new job, I would most assuredly tell myself that I will go in there with a different "Identity". Remember you asked if I thought you might visualize yourself as someone else? Well, thiz is a chance to see if it might work for you, right here. There is a lot to say about the technique relative to success. In other words, if you thnk you can, then you will be able to. Would that visualization of yourself as a successful hairdresser who went to work for years and this was just another day..work? To this end, you are not imagining yourself as something you are not, justa little further down the road....

Good Evening! Well, I asked for all evening hours, 4 days. I figure, I need my mornings to get it together, meditate, care for my garden, etc. As for telling any clients anything - I plan on being professional, not the usual chatter box haircutter, the least they know about me the better - I will direct the conversation to them and let them do all the talking - I think it is better that way. My main concern is keeping in control - not to panic in front of anyone! Better yet, not to panic in the car on the way to work - that's always real special, to have to pull over in traffic freaking out! How are you doing? Maria :)

Maria, I am delighted to know that you are trying a new peofessin. I wish I was near..you could do my hair. This may be very important right now for you, in that this type of work requires lots of one-on-one contact with your clients. They always confide in their hairdresser.or cosmetologist. I meant to ask if you are doing hair, nails, skin care, massage ?? You ahve the choice when dealing with these people as to whether or not YOU confide in them. I wuldn't, but that is me. You could tell them what ever you want..they don't know you ! I might tell them about your talents but nothing personal. That is just how I feel.. You will get the opportunity to build relationships with people as you see fit. Maybe a real good choice for you at this time. Is this full time?

Hi All, As some you already know, I am a writer. However, sometimes two jobs are required. So, I also hold a cosmetology license and am going to go work within two weeks at a new salon. I was hired on the spot, my credentials are great - but, of course, no one knows about my panic attacks. I have been working from home for about two years and before that was a staff writer for a large real estate firm and could come to work at my pace - no real pressure. I really need to prepare myself for working "on the outside" - I fear my agoraphobia will get the way not to mention my panic attacks. Now, my first thought is to ask my Dr. for an increased amount of medication to handle this situation - he may or may not agree. I so wish things could be different - I am going to deal with this myself, I am a single person, I have no choice. I would appreciate if anyone out there could give me some hints, maybe some self talk dialoges that may help me. I am pretty strong - but this fear still lingers. Maria
