What is Agoraphoba?

for 23 år siden 0 33 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Sometimes my gut is right and sometimes it isn't. I have found the following strategy helpful. Whenever I have to make a decision whether or not to do something and I find my gut pulling me not to go or not to take a risk I ask myself "What am I avoiding my following my gut and not doing it?" Usually, it become pretty clear pretty fast that I am trying to avoid something (usually anxiety). Using this strategy I can face the fact that I do a lot of avoiding and challenge it (sometimes). I have avoidance issues now still since 1994, and I go with my gut reaction. As I am not sure if this Agoraphobia or my little person inside keeping me safe. If I had listened to him on Oct. 10, 1994, I would have stayed home and would never have been in that wreck. What is one to believe? The person inside trying to keep you safe..or the drs who say you are not without problems? Delicate way of putting it EH? Quitting smoking made me shake so bad.it was terrible. Detox, I believe. That is over and I thank the Higher Powers. as I needed to do that, but needed strong support. Certainly did get it, and many thanx, again. This message was edited by am on 1-26-02 @ 1:19 AM

Quitting smoking does call on all of our ability to remain calm, positive, and focused. If you feel it affected your panic disorder, then it probably did. In agoraphobia, it's the avoidance issue though, such as if you were to refuse to get in a car again. -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator

That is so interesting. I don't have the answers, of course, but your reflection plus the test results give food for discussion with your therapist, don't you think? -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator

hi, Anne-Marie and thank you for the warm welcome. This Ag thing would be pertinent in only one small part of this big panic thing. I sometimes see myself trapped under a truck or car. This visual just comes in front of my face for no particular reason. That is the old fear of cars again. And since seeing a new, bad, bad wreck, and with the World Trade Center disaster..wait a minute...I went to surgery that very hour that the WTC was bombed by the planes, saw it on TV, as we appraoched the OR. That was the day of the brow lift, upper bleph and laser job. I never will forget that day 9/11. So when I came out of surgery I was trembling so hard they wanted to keep me overnight..I said no and went home with a Rx for 10mg Valium. I took them but the trembling kept up for days. This trembling was from the gut.the whole body trembled. Not handshaking..but trembling..that was when it started. Then the Quit and the wreck. That is three. Tough not to make me regress. I was orininally diagnosed withut the Agoraphobia. I see now whee the test question would pick up on that as i answered yes to the question. So now I have establihed a timeline for my problem. 3 thins. Dos quitting smoking evoke panic attacks in panic people..It did a little with me.but nothing I couldn't handle. I rather thought of the wreck..forgot about 9/11. Do all of these have to do with it? Is each a separate issue? Red

Hi, Red! Welcome! Let me clarify first that the test does not diagnose. Only certified professionals do that. What it does is point out a possibility of something that need to be discussed with your health professional, Dr or Primary Care Physician. The site's glossary (please see link on the left in The Library) defines it as "a fear of being in a situation in which escape would be difficult or help would not be available in the case of a panic attack. Often results in increasing avoidance of certain things, places or situations." Does this ring a bell? -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator
