I have been reading about the importants of rewarding ourselves for making it through each day smoke free. I really can't seem to come up with anything. Am I making this quit harder on myself by not rewarding myself? Maybe this is why I've been a "nut case" lately!? Don't know why it's so difficult to find something I can do just for me, but I have NO clue. I had a hard time figuring out rewards as well. Moment rewards: We use to take breaks to smoke, we would put the cigarette to our mouth and inhale. Moment rewards like gum, mints, taking 5 minutes alone, reading an article without interruption will help to create new & healthy habits and non smoking memories. Daily rewards: Quitting is hard work. Reward yourself with a candle lit bubble bath, eat out instead of having to cook, rent a movie Celebrate Milestones: 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, or however you decide to set your milestones up. Plan a trip somewhere, plan on buying a new room of furniture, a day at the spa, etc. My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 73 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,206 Amount Saved: $292 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 4 Mins: 29 Seconds: 1

Stormy, In general, most reward systems have three components: small one for after each craving, medium for the end of each smoke-free day and a bigger one for the end of each smoke-free week and month. Suggestions for small rewards: candy, gum, 10 extra minutes of sleep in the morning, second helping of dessert at dinner. Suggestions for medium rewards: Haircut, a new shirt, ordering in, a long bubble bath... Suggestions for larger rewards: a trip, a night out, taking up a new hobby The most crucial component of the reward system is that the rewards must matter to you! If they don't you won't keep persevering to get them. Good luck, Danielle _____________________________ The SSC Support Team

Hi, Stormy. The advice above is great! Just want to say that rewards don't necessarily have to cost anything at all. Are there things you like to do that make you happy or feel good? I like to spend time in the park reading, napping, watching people, and feeding the ducks. 99 cents for a loaf of bread if I feed the ducks, cost-free if I don't. Some days I just toss off the burdens and go flop in the park. That's a reward. Another thing I do sometimes is not take the freeway to where I'm going. If I can take my time, I take surface streets in a route I don't normally take. Different scenery, slow down, take it easy at a time I would normally be making a mad dash just because I want to. That's a reward. Sometimes I'll stop off on the way home at a book or music store and browse. Perhaps I'll find a book or CD that seems interesting, but will save it until a milestone reward. The browsing and finding, the giving myself the concrete promise of a future reward is a bit of a reward in itself. Just a few ideas, Stormy. Congratulations on 7 days quit. You're doing great! :) Keep up the good quit. Stormy, Congrats on ONE WEEK of not smoking! That is awesome. Rewards definitely help but the nut case thing may still be there ;p They should be something that is important to you and for me it helped if they really celebrated a new thing in my quit. Things that smelled good (I don't know if you are male or female so bare with me): perfume/cologne, a scented candle, air freshner for the car. Butterscotch candies never tasted so good to me as in the 2nd week of my quit. I also took a lot of baths, rented more movies, got my car washed, had my curtains dry cleaned, bought flavored coffees. Do you have hobbies? Maybe something new that goes along with that or just giving yourself time to do that hobby. Boy the possibilities are endless. Enjoy yourself and be VERY proud - you are doing great!
