Andy, the gym should have people that can help you work on what you wnat to achieve. Talk to them and see if they can help you come up with a plan to start on. I am with you I am just starting out at the Wellness Center at work. They have a great program. They have exercise specialist, dietitians, and nurses that after screening help you develop a plan. Yes its true, I will finally come to terms with just how much weight I gained since I quit. I work for a family-owned business, and my cousin and uncle joined a gym in town. My uncle kept saying the company would pay for me to join, and I didn't believe it would actually happen. BUT.....we just came back from the gym, and he picked up the tab for a year's contract. No excuses now, I can get back on track with exercise. I haven't done any since before I had my daughter, and that was 3 1/2 yrs ago. Hard to admit it, can't think of anymore excuses, need to just start moving and see what happens. Any advice for the novice? Thanks broomsdrew, I get 3 trainer appointments with my membership, so I intend to go over it all with them. Maybe I'll make my first appt for tomorrow after work. I'm fighting in my head with the idea of doing Atkins at first to shed the extra lbs, but its probably not a smart idea. This gym sounds like the place you have, its more of a wellness center too, and its linked to one of the hospitals in the area. I signed up b/c its got an older crowd, and I wouldn't be self conscious like at some of the gyms around with the buff people all checking eachother out. Maybe pretty soon I'll be posting on the fitter quitters thread. Andy, You can work with your doctor to come up with a plan that is right for you! Make sure you eat right and keep your portions low. Use lots of water and see the difference it can make with weight maintenance. You will feel better and more confident.
