I smoked 40 to 60 a day. I would never light up until about 10 am and then I did not stop till I went to sleep. I had a couple of open packets in my bag, at work, next to my computer, in the bathroom etc. My motto use to be "hey I live in South Africa, my chances of dying from a gun shot is far more likely than dying from smoking!!" Then for 3 mornings in a row I woke up coughing, and it was painful. I realised that a small rolled up piece of paper stuffed with dried out leaves was my god. I got angry at how weak I was to this habit, so I went to my doc and told him I have to quit without murdering someone. He gave me a prescription for zyban and tranquilisers. After using zyban for 10 days I quit smoking, and am proud to say that I have been smoke free for 9 days today and I have not murdered anyone. This website has also helped me to stand my ground. See I thought I was a heavy smoker at about 20 - 25 a day... But being here has shown me just how light my addiction has been compared to some... How did people ever manage yo fit in time for 40 to 80 smokes a day??? just can't fathom that... 16 a day is 1 for every hour you are awake.... Hi, well I can see I'm outnumbered here in years, but in smokes I fit right in with some of you. Smoked for 5 years. Started out with a few a week, to 1 pack a day, to 1-1/2 packs, to eventually 2 packs--depending on the situation and right up to year...was really chain smoking. Every 15 minutes...had to have another, and another...Honestly, I believe on any given day with boredom on the menu or a long drive...I smoked exactly 2packs a day. Especially being a truck driver on the road doing long distance. But, I've been blessed to give that career up, go back to college, and give up smoking. I have alot to be thankful for right now!!! I never use to be able to fathom it, either. I figured I was smoking a cigarette about every 15 to 20 minutes. I just lept from one pack a day to twoone month four months ago. it's cool that you have been able to quit. It's inspirational for others to read. I thought I had the prize at 40, but as I look at some of these quit meters, I realize that there were other heavy smokers. However, I am curious and too lazy to do the math. So how much did you use to smoke and how did you quit, i.e. cold turkey or NRT?
