I am new here and I need some advice. Last year when I quit first month I did not put any weight, but second month I put 6 kilograms. I am not fat , but when I stop smoking I always put some weight(I started smoking because of that), I do not eat to much an I drink a lot of water. Any advice? Don't eat much and drink a lot of water...lol. I learned these things from the Discovery Health web page: 1. Smoking burns calories, up to 200 a day. 2. Smoking increases energy expenditure, or metabolism 3. Quitting smoking causes weight gain because the body begins to work more efficiently. The body's metabolism slows and food is digested more efficiently. 4. Insulin levels increase, which enable the body to process more sugar for energy. The site goes on to say that a modest weight gain (5-10 pounds) is common, you can do a few things to ward off those extra pounds and improve your health: 1. To burn the 200 calories used by smoking, walk briskly for 45 minutes or swim laps for 30 minutes a day. 2. Eliminate 200 calories from your food intake - 2 lite beers, 20 potato chips, 4 chocolate sandwich cookies, 2 tbsp of butter, 2 oz of cheddar cheese, small order of fries, hot dog and roll, 2 frozen waffles, 1/2 cup of macaroni and cheese. 3. Don't use eating to deal with a crave. 4. Track what you're eating, how much and why. 5. Remember that the ultimate goal is to stop smoking. Don't try to lose weight while quitting, but instead monitor your current weight. Join us on the Daily Diet Watch thread to help stay accountable. Good luck!
