Grow up!

for 18 år siden 0 5195 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi Pen and Joe and all those others who do not understand the offense here. To me, when someone says grow up, they are saying that I am acting like a child. When someone is having problems dealing with their emotions due to quitting smoking, telling them to grow up really isn't very helpful. I have had lots of issues with emotions since early in my quit, however, I feel this has nothing to do with my level of maturity. Now, if you are saying that with the maturity of the quit comes the growth to handle emotions in a possitive manner that is entirely different than telling me that I am acting like a child (grow up). As always, just my opinion. Take what you want and leave the rest. Wow JuJu... That was kind of harsh don't you think :quest: Didn't notice your quit meter so I'm really not sure how far into this thing you are. There is a change process that goes along with quitting that does change the way we think and the way we feel about things. I've noticed that for most quitters the emotional process is probably the toughest part of the quit. The emotional part took me a long time to get through and I'm still not all the way there yet. I am very grateful to the compassion that the people on this site show for eachother as well as for myself. I never would have made it this far with out it. Grow up huh? That just kind of hit me wrong. How about we just simply grow?
yes I can agree that you need to mature just a bit
Remember, I said... "if you'd like me to remind you of a few, I'd be glad to do that in some other venue, but I don't think that this post is the correct place to do that!" Maybe this IS the place! :eg: Naw... I'm mature enough not to do that! :p Crave the Quit! Lady,
I feel this has nothing to do with my level of maturity
Sure it does! They say that when we quit smoking, we literally go back to the emotional level that we were at when we started smoking... and for many of us, that was when we were teenagers and... well... immature. Since our coping mechanism has always been smoking, we have never learned how to deal with our emotions in any other way other than smoking... so when we quit, we have to learn to deal with them, and yes, that takes a certain amount of maturity that most of us have to gain after we quit. I believe you quit at age 15 and I at age 17... I can only speak for myself, but I was DEFINITELY not the most mature 17 year old out there, and I do feel like when I quit, I went back to that emotional maturity level at least to some degree. I too have struggled emmensely with my quit and have grown up, as have you. You and I have both grown up together over the past 11 or so months, so I think it's safe to say that at least a little bit of this was in fact immaturity... but not the same type of immaturity that a teenager or child has. See, we're definitely mature in our responsibilities. You just finished school, are raising your family, working full time and have other commitments as well, and in the midst of all of that, you quit smoking! I'm going to school full time and working full time at one job and working part time at another one. There's definite maturity in all of those actions, but emotionally, yes, we have both had to deal with some immaturity issues (if you'd like me to remind you of a few, I'd be glad to do that in some other venue, but I don't think that this post is the correct place to do that! :eg: :8o: ;) ) You know what I mean though! Yes, we HAVE been immature and have had to "grow up." I don't think that this is a bad thing though... I just think that it's part of the process of quitting. I believe in calling things as they are... when I am whining and complaining and don't want to continue with my quit, yes, I'm being immature! Does that mean it's wrong? NO!!! Does that mean it's not normal? NO!!! Does that mean that I'm not going to do it? Probably not! All it means is that I still have a lot of growing up to do, as we all do. Can't you

When I first read your post, I thought "she's probably talking to herself more than anybody" but I wasn't going to say anything, but it's already been said, so I think it's safe. :) If grow up means take responsibility for your actions, your moods and your quit, then I completely agree... but I do think that there were probably better ways to say that... but we've all had days where we don't (and don't want to) say things the "politically correct" way, and I completely understand that! Either way, I think we all got your point. However, the "growing up" part of quitting does take a while. It's not something we can just do overnight. Quitting is most certainly a lifestyle change in every sense of the word! Lifestyle changes take some time to adjust to, and it's OK if you, or anybody, is having a hard time with that. I first quit back in June, over 11 months ago, and other than a couple of mishaps, I've been smoke free for almost the entire time, but I still have days where I find the "growing up" part of the quit very difficult. It's OK if it takes you a while to get there... it does for most of us. But, you're right... we all do need to "grow up" when we quit... and quitting is most definitely the first step... and also the most important one. Congratulations on your 50 days! Rejoice in your Freedom, rather than mourn for your Slavery! Crave the Quit!
