Anna, Your best resource for any NRT would be you family physician. While many members have wonderful tips regrding different NRT's your doctor can advise you to which is best for you. Take Care, Melanie _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Hi Everybody, Maybe those of you who have used some kind of nicotine gum to quit can share your thougts. How long did you use the gum and what made you stop using it? I'm on 19 days now and using the gum. Kind of afraid of becoming dependant on the gum now and on the other hand afraid to stop using it. Any thougts will be appreciated. Anna.

When I quit in January I used the gum and I'm back on it now. It helped me a lot. The hiccups in the first couple of days bother me though but now I know it will go away. I know what to expect. In fact, I was already weaning off when I went back to smoking. I am so sorry that I started smoking again. I was on my way! Oh well, there is always next time, this time. If I can have no cigs for a month I can have no cigs for the rest of my life.

Hi Anna, As Melanie says, it's an idea to see your doctor about this before making any decisions about stopping the gum. I have used it on its own and in conjunction with other things in various quits. In the beginning, I found it gave me bad mouth ulcers, but I think it is better these days. Anyway, I realised quite quickly that I got too much Nicotine from one single piece, compared to the amount of Nicotine in one cigarette. I started cutting up the squares and only used a half or a quarter of a piece. This also allowed me to wean myself off the gum more easily. At 19 days, I feel you may be a bit premature in worrying about stopping it. Certainly it is possible to become dependent on the gum....you are already dependent on the Nicotine from cigarettes. The gum simply gives it to you in a cleaner form and allows you to wean yourself off gradually. The whole idea of NRT is to allow your body to cope with all the psychological fators of quitting, while helping you to cope with the physical withdrawal. Follow your doc's advice and the instructions on the packet and you should be fine.
