Thank you all for the replies to my post yesterday about NRT's and what makes a quit stick. I understand watching someone slowly kill themselves with nicotine...I've seen it many times several ways at the nursing home I work in. It's very sad and they always end up not smoking the last 3 days or so of their lives because they are too weak to get out of bed to the smoking area. So not only are they dealing with death, but withdrawel as well. Very sad. That is one of my reasons for wanting to quit. I want to quit while I still have a life to live... I needed someone to tell me I wasn't cheating and seeing others long term quit with the patch. I read too much on the whyquit site and got scared of NRTs even though they helped me. Obviously the CT didn't work for me. Whatever it takes right? Even if it's standing on my head for 2 weeks :) So I put on the patch last night. I slept OK, but woke up at 3am and 4am thinking I was late for work. I get up at 5am. I wan't tired though today, so apparently it didn't hurt. I am sick of smoking. It's just that little panic comes on that "OH no I can never smoke again?" and with CT I ran for a cig as soon as possible. Even if I wasn't craving. With the patch it's like a safety blanket and when that thought comes I remind myself that the nicotine is still there and calm down. Hopefully like the patch program states my mind will change on the thought that I actually "need" nicotine? I was always afraid before that I could never let go of it and would quit the program. So this time I am going the whole 6weeks as recommended by the addiction counsler and see what happens. So I can proudly say that I have not smoked for 1 Day, 19 hours, 7 minutes and 51 seconds and left 35 cigarettes unlit. I have saved $6.23 and 11 hours and 40 minutes of my life! I have been Free of Nicotine since 2/10/2006! It's Good to be FREE! Thanks for all of you support, stories and advice. Tennielle

Congratulations Tennielle on almost 2 days!!! You've got it - whatever it takes, just don't smoke. Whyquit is a good site for some things, but I think they scare people who really need the NRT to quit away from that, and therefore, those people fail. It's MUCH better to use NRT than to smoke... I think even whyquit.com will admit to that. So if that's what it takes for you to quit, then go for it!!! I sometimes relate it to exercise. I broke my foot a few years ago and for about a year and a half, I had a pin in my foot (I couldn't afford to have it taken out) and even walking was hard. If the only exercise available was walking or running, I wouldn't have exercised... not then and not now (because I HATE running!) So, swimming was my no impact solution to exercise... and it still is. If I weren't able to swim, I wouldn't exercise... that's why there are different methods. But to me, aerobic exercise is aerobic exercise... and as long as you're doing it, then that's good enough. The same holds true for quitting smoking... however you do it, as long as you do it, is fine. It's not really important HOW you do it, as long as it gets done. That's my opinion. Best wishes on the patch! Crave the Quit! Tennielle, One more thing I forgot to say.....
It's just that little panic comes on that "OH no I can never smoke again?"
Abraham Lincoln said "The best thing about the future is that it only comes one day at a time. Take one day at a time. Don't think about this as a forever thing. You only have to quit for today. Worry about tomorrow when it gets here. K? Crave the Quit! Don't let yourself turn quitting into some sort of unbearable life sentence that is going to leave you craving forever for a smoke! This is a 'choice'....it's not that you CAN'T smoke....you CHOOSE not to at the present. There is NOTHING wrong with NRT. The goal is to STOP smoking....if standing on your head at a main intersection, nude, in the rain gives you the push you need to quit........THEN DO IT! (and let us all know the address LOL) NRT alone will not enable you with a magic bullet that will let you quit.....you are going to have to WANT it. Stick to your patch program faithfully.....make plans to avoid the situations that would lead you to smoking......and then hang tough......it WILL get better katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1500 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 60,017 Amount Saved: $8250 Life Gained: Days: 195 Hrs: 17 Mins: 4 Seconds: 48

Tenielle, I missed you the last couple of days :) Good to see you are back in the saddle and ready to ride! Use the patch to the very end of the program and use the site as support, you know we are always there for you. If your nights are sleepless, you can try relaxing before bed with a warm shower or bath or even a hot beverage. It is ok to take the patch off for sleep, but make sure you slap it on first thing in the morning. This may give you a more rested sleep..and with kids, we can use all the good sleep we can get! Let us know how you are doing. Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
