Hi Josie thank you for your response.I shld let you know that i have not yet quit smoking ..i will be very soon.So is it still normal to be coughing up this weird looking flem even though im still smoking ..like i said i did see me dr about it and told her about and she checked me out and said my lungs sounded fine and i am getting a chest xray just to be a 100% sure and as i mentioned before about a mnth and a half ago i had a nasty chest cold ..and it was a cple weeks after it went away that i noticed a lot more junk coming up and the teeny pen dot sizes of blood. The blood is what scared me and thats why i right away went to my dr..she said its probably stuff coming up left over from cold aswelll as the junk from smoking ..and that my lungs sound perfectly clear but im doing the chest xray just to extra carefull and the stuff thats been coming up hasnt been as bad as it was its gotten less ..so i hope thats a good sign thats not anything serious ..but this was enough to scare me and the reason why im determined to quit before it does turn it something serious..but i havnt started my quit date yet but i will be very soon. And Rusty lol i liked your post ...i will have to goodle her .

Hey everyone ..this is a goofy queastion im sure but here it goes.As stated my intro thread.I have been smoking for about a yr and ahalf and im going to be quiting ..im very serious about it and now its just a matter of picking a quit date and doing it !!! But what my queastion is to when you did smoke did any of you find you were hacking up some really gross looking flem or mucas that had a real range of looks and sorry to be gross but i do at times cough up this gross looking stuff sometimes its just clear and frothy looking other times it has brownish stuff in it probably tarter and also i had a chest cold about a mnth and half ago and about two weeks ago i coughed up my usual gross flem but this one time it came up and it was really really thick and a tough texture to it and had a very tiny bit of blood in it and since then it hasnt been as bad and its gotten a lot less but still cough up some gross stuff and very very seldom there will be a pen dot size of blood in it ..this scared the heck out of me and is why im quiting and i went to my docter she checked out my lungs and said they sounded clear and fine and im doing a chest xray just to be sure and she said the stuff that was coming up so heavily was likely crap that my lungs were getting rid from my cold and also the smoking and thats what the blood was probably from..but doing the xray just to be sure.So im wondering have any of you had all kinds icky wierd stuff come up in your flem at times ..just need some feed back .

Hi Krimson, actually I was wrong-- it was Rosanne Rosanadana. She was a wonderful character on Saturday Night Live who spoke in great, extreme detail about her bodily functions. She was hilarious. Perhaps you can google her and see what I mean. Hi Krimson, I don't mean to make light of your post, but you make me think of Emily Latella. (Gilda Radner - Saturday Night Live). Anyway, the answer is yes...that is one of the side effects of quitting smoking. Not everyone has it, but a lot do. There are lots of things that your body does to get rid of the toxins. It's good that you checked with the doctor! Good luck and hang in there! Cigarettes Not Smoked

Krimson, As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your bodys Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process. They are first paralyzed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus. These symptoms can last day or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable. Keep us updated, Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.

Krimson, Take the lead from your doctor. The mucous and coughing will usually occur when you are cutting back and quitting. Post often and keep us updated. Keep Strong, Josie ____________________ The SSC Support Team.
