Here are some very interesting ancient words of wisdom, "There remains a sabbath resting for the people of God. For the man that has entered into God's rest has also himself rested from his own works, just as God did from his own. Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest. The word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit and joints and their marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart." If we can use God's word to discern what our real thoughts and intentions are in our hearts, then we can ask forgiveness for the areas we need to work on and receive peace of mind from all our disturbing thoughts, and enter into his rest, having a special feeling of joy and peace of mind in praising God. It is a difficult thing to do; that is to face up to our bad thoughts, and realise who we really are compared to the measuring stick in God's word. But if we can do that; then we can be assured that we can obtain forgiveness and joy and peace of mind. It means facing up to the fact that we are not perfect. I think it takes work and meditation on ourselves, coming to know who we really are and what we believe that can wake us up to reality, sort of a self analysis, if we are able to do it; and then we can have peace of mind when we can forgive ourselves and others, knowing we are also forgiven.
