Depending on what type of x-ray's you have, they can usually tell many things.
Make sure you voice your concerns and questions with your doctor as well :)

Yeah, I have an appointment in a couple of weeks. Can they tell if there's a lot of tar and smoking crud in your lungs with a chest x-ray?

I got a cold that made me cough last week and I coughed up stuff that tasted like cigarettes! A year and a half later.. uhck!
Believe it or not, i had some urges to smoke after that. Weird.
I never coughed a lot after I quit like others did - Do you suppose all that gunk is still in my lungs?
