HI Like Casey said, for a "crutch' use a short straw, instead of inhaling nasty chemicals and poison into your lungs/body. you will be inhaling air. It may put you at ease to study, to have the straw to fiddle with. When I was studying I would read a chapter (depending on the length) jot down notes or if there were questions at the end answer the questions. take a short break. You can only retain so much at one time. so don't try to "cram".

I need to study for an exam that I'm taking Friday, but I don't seem to know how to study without smoking. I don't beleive that the smoking makes me smarter, quicker, or wiser. I don't know what it does for me, besides allowa me to procrastinate.

Hey Bgaineshunter,
I would have thought that smoking would have hindered your ability to retain information. I have only come to this conclusion after all the things i have read that smoking does to every cell of your body... Anywho....
Sit somewhere you wouldnt usually sit to study, go to the library or maybe cut up some celery and or carrot sticks. Im not much of a beleiver in the celery or carrot stick theory tho as you are still carrying on the association with smoking so even though you have broken the nicotine habit you havnt broken the hand to mouth habit.
Just reinforce to your subconcious you are a non smoker. you will find that those old thoughts will creep in and when you feel them, acknowlegde them, work through it and move on. Positive reinforcements. You can do bgaines :) I know you can

Just like you do in your quit, give yourself a reward. For every half an hour of studying, give yourself 10 minutes of free time and a reward. (Your brain stops retaining information after 20 minutes.)
If you have too much pent up energy, take a brisk walk around your neighborhood and then go back to studying.
