Simple Terms for the Depression

Yes.... I read about the B complex and have been taking that for a couple of weeks. I also take a St johns wort capsle (approved by my doctor) a few times a week. St Johns wort makes extra seretonin. Our receptors for our happy chemicals actually get turned off and our bodies forget how to turn them on again. Slowly but surely they heal. I read that some never do.....but the body adjusts. I also think that later on in our quits the excitement wears off and we sort of feel like...."So now what" I know at around 100 days I felt like I was in a limbo. I didn't want to smoke...but I also didn't like how "life was feeling. Now I know better. Life was still great...just my receptors were'nt tell me. It has greatly improved. I also think that summertime had a big boost in my depression. I really associated smoking with the nice weather. Now that I have a few weeks of nice weather under my belt it is becoming much easier. Hang in there..... AND BEAR..... GO AHEAD AND EAT YOUR CHOCOLATE....AND LOVE IT UP!! THAT IS....UNLESS YOU FIND THE FERTILIZER MORE FUN! ;) MERCY My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 130 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,600 Amount Saved: $581.10 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 3 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. They can help come up with a plan that is right for you and your body :) Josie, Support Specialist

In my past quits I have always experienced depression. Some of it is physical, some mental. This quit, I have vowed that i am going to just embrace how i feel and go with it. Using positive self talk about the benefits of quitting have helped me this time. When I want to smoke, I'll say something like, 'Oh yes, you want to poison yourself, destroy your lungs, waste your time and money, and become a life long drug addict". It helps. As for the depression, thanks for the info about the B complex. I have some in my cabinet that has been neglected for a while! I know that I will not feel this way forever. I am working towards physical and mental freedom from nicotine. new me My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/26/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 5 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 120 Amount Saved: $25.00 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 18 Mins: 13 Seconds: 17

Hi Mercy, Yes I was researching this morning also, exercise does help eleviate the depression, and something else I ran across was taking Vitamin B complex! And from what I can see, the depression is very very common when we quit smoking. You see guys, we are not nuts, it is very common! And tip #3, Vitamin B complex also helps keep the weight in place....I am going to the drugstore now..... :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 87 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,175 Amount Saved: $917.85 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 16 Mins: 13 Seconds: 22

Regarding depression and smoking: Apparently smoking causes a flood of dopamine to the brain. Over time, your brain reduces the number of dopamine receptors so it can handle the flood. When you stop smoking the dopamine in your brain plummets dramatically, and what's more, you don't have enough receptors to process the normal amounts. Thus, depression. It takes awhile for your brain to grow back more receptors. Exercise actually speeds that growth process, while also flooding your brain with feel-good endorphins.
