I have had panic attacks for the past 6 yrs & in that time I have fainted 3 times. For most people it is true that when you are having a panic attack, your blood pressure rises & makes you feel light-headed, like you might faint, but typically you don't. However, I am hypoglycemic, so, sometimes when adrenaline is released in my system, it can cause my blood sugar to drop, thus resulting in fainting. I was extremely confused by this as it sounds you are as well. So, I talked to my doctor about it & this was his explanation. I keep a small snack with me at all times, usually a pack of crackers & if I get too anxious, I eat the snack so that I can at least ease my mind about not fainting during a panic attack. I hope this helps & that you are doing o.k.
I just wanted to say to Vickers4 that I really appreciate your advice. Thank you very much.
What has stuck in my mind is a section from the book 'Coping successfully
with panic attacks' by Shirley Trickett. What she has says has worried me
for such a long time and goes against what you and many others have said.
'When the body can't take any more adrenalin an artificial relaxation response
is produced by the brief unconsciousness of fainting; the muscles relax,
the breathing slows, etc. Perhaps a panic attack could be the body pushing
for this 'going for a faint' ' (page 11)
So you can see why I have worried. This author has worked with people like us for years. Does this mean that what she is saying is wrong; that when we have too much adrenalin, our bodies will shut down to protect us?
