hi jys,
I have been researching this question for you and unfortunately it is kind of a complicated answer. I am not sure how much detail you are looking for. I would suggest that you consult with your doctor or pharmacist for a more detailed explanation.
Basically, Ativan, also known as lorazepam, is part of a class of medications called benzodiazepines. These types of medications are thought to help control anxiety by altering the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals in the brain that result in the transmission of nerve impulses. The end result of Ativan is that it provides is fairly fast acting, short-term relief of anxiety.
Hope this helps,
Casey
