Hey Paul When I started having panic attacks a emergency room heart doctor gave me atenenol for my heart. To slow it down. It totally messed me up and didn't help my anxiety. I don't think the Beta Blocker is the answer. For some it helps. My wife takes it but her heart would race all the time. The only time our hearts race or at least me is when I have a panic attack which I haven't had one in a while because they have me on the correct medicine. I am taking Effexor for Anixety and Depression and they give me Klonopin for the break through anxiety. They also have me on Seroquel to help my racing irrational thoughts. Tell you doctor to help you. I hope they do. Chad

Thankyou for the support. I live in the UK and have not had very good experiences with our doctors. I have made an appointment with another doctor for this friday. I am going to insist that they treat my anxiety. I feel I can not start to work on getting better untill I have my anxiety under control. I am going to ask for Buspar. I can understand why they gave me a beta blocker (to slow down my heart). I cannot however understand why they are not atempting to treat the anxiety that is causing my heart to race.

Paul, I am sorry to hear you are having such a bad time of it. Be persistent with your GP. Take the Panic Test and print your GP a copy. This will help you both better assess the situation. Also try the Panic Program, it is free, informative, and very helpful. It was designed by doctor's, to help you every step of the way. You will get there. Be strong and keep at your doctor. Your health is what is most important. Keep posting we are here for you, Josie

Hey. Newsflash for your doctor. The anxiety is causing the heart/chest stuff. It is a total reaction of anxiety and harmless. If he/she fixes the anxiety and panic, the heart/chest pain will clear up. Good luck and stand firm!

Hi Paul...sorry you are suffering....only we with anxiety can understand the pain you are undergoing....you need to go see a psychiatrist....you have an illness that needs to be treated with medication, proper diet, excercise, therapy, etc.....sounds like you need a benzo like klonopin or xanax to help your system calm down.....perhaps even an ssri drug like prozac, etc....not sure if you are also depressed.....first step is to get stable and then start living your life again...also you should gradually cut sugar, caffeine, cigs and alcohol out of your life if you currently indulge in any of these....Where do you live, if you are in the nyc area I can probably recommend some doctors for you....Let us know how you are doing, Michael

I have been having anxiety and panic attacks for the last two years. I finally went to the doctors about it after a nightmare weekend of continual attacks. I was first put on a slow release beta blocker to control my heart rate but after three weeks I was having some bad side effects so my GP changed me to two short acting beta blockers a day. My GP wants me to go and see a shrink. Yes they control my heart rate and slow it down but they are doing nothing about the anxiety. I feel like I am going crazy. It is effecting my job and relationship with my other half. I have worked so hard to get where I am and its all crumbling away. I can't sleep at night and I feel totally alone. I dont think I am being taken seriously. I hate the anxiety it has so much control over my life. I feel like my GP is not helping. How can I take control of my life if my GP won't help in controlling my anxiety. The anxiety is crafty and sneaks up on you when you least expect it. I can be minding my own business and then bang. Its like a switch has been turned on in my head. What can I do.
